The Computer Science Undergraduate Association is disheartened and frustrated by the extrajudicial murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless members of the Black community. We condemn the actions of the police and stand in support of the Black community and Black Lives Matter. It is not enough for us to individually support the movement or quietly acknowledge its importance. All of us must work to not only combat ingrained and systemic racism in our nation, but also combat inequalities in the tech industry.

The tech industry’s stark inequalities must be addressed. Disadvantaged communities often lack funding for computer science education. Underrepresented minorities face a toxic environment in tech companies due to discrimination and a lack of diversity. Students and software engineers continue to increase the price of rent in historically Black communities such as Oakland, contributing to gentrification. It is imperative that we all work to alleviate the endemic issues that Black Americans experience on an everyday basis.

If we do not do our utmost to be part of the solution, we will be part of the problem. To this end, we have identified six charities that fight systemic injustice in our field, our county, and our nation. We will match up to $1000 total of donations to these charities.

Send us a receipt of your donation, or Venmo us the amount you wish to donate along with the name of the charity, and we will donate an equal amount to that charity. If you wish to donate to another organization, please send us a message.

To our Black members -- we appreciate you. You matter, your lives matter, and you are valued.
