We are excited to share that we are hiring 2 Assistant Professors, one in the area of Emerging Zoonoses and one in the area of Comparative Biomechanics, both anticipated to start July 1, 2024.

The Emerging Zoonoses position is live through October 27 at 11:59 PM PST. We seek a colleague who develops and applies fundamental ecological and evolutionary approaches to meet the challenge of zoonotic diseases in human populations. Represented areas of interest include pathogen, zoonotic host, and vector ecology; phylogenomics and computational biology; environmental and global change impacts on emergence and transmission; and the evolutionary drivers of emergence and adaptation to the human population. The Comparative Biomechanics position is live through October 1 at 11:59 PM PST. We seek exceptional scientists researching integrative organismal design, biomechanics, or functional morphology in either aquatic or terrestrial taxa (which may include plants or animals, with particular interest in humans both past and present). We are particularly interested in candidates doing integrative work combining laboratory, field, and modeling approaches (or spanning multiple timescales or levels of organization) to answer fundamental questions in organismal design, functional adaptation, evolutionary morphology, or related fields. Tune in to 90.7 FM next Tuesday (August 31st @ 9:00AM) for a new episode of The Graduates as we hear from IB grad student Nina Sokolov. Nina collects bees in the Sierras to try to figure out how viruses move between native and non-native species. She's just completed a long field season, and now she plans to spend time in the lab analyzing the virus samples she's collected. When she's not in the field or in the lab, she uses art to teach people about her research. She's created coloring pages to raise awareness about different bee species, and she's currently working with the Biota project to create educational zines for incarcerated individuals. Listen to the interview to hear about her research and her outreach projects as well as what you can do to help native California bees.

Tune in to 90.7 FM next Tuesday (August 17th @ 9:00AM) for a new episode of The Graduates as we hear from Kat Magoulick (Dept. of Integrative Biology). Kat is a paleontologist who studies the Great American Biotic Interchange, an event precipitated by the formation of the Isthmus of Panama about 2.7 million years ago. With the continents connected by land, animals from North America moved into South America and vice versa. In the interview, Kat talks about how she uses fossil occurrence data and paleoclimate models to try to understand why the animals that moved between the continents were able to do so.
