All classes are now P/NP by default for this Spring semester and still count toward major requirements in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

Many classes have changed their policies to accommodate the situation. ED101 no longer requires live Zoom attendance. ED100 may follow suit. BUSSA is reaching out to faculty to try and advocate for student needs in this tough time.

Do you have any CED classes that have been changed policies to accommodate the pandemic? Are there any changes that you feel should be made?

VIRTUAL TOWN HALL ALERT! Urban Studies Committee Chair Charisma Acey and City & Regional Planning Chair Karen Chapple will be holding a virtual town hall tonight from 6-7pm for Urban Studies students! Here is the original message sent over an email to all US majors:

"A few of you have been sending us questions, and we want to give folks a chance to come together to convey concerns or get consistent answers (if we have them!). So we are scheduling an Urban Studies Town Hall for Wednesday, March 18, 6-7 PM. Urban Studies Committee Chair Charisma Acey will be in attendance, as will I. We have a few thoughts to share but mostly we want to use the time to hear from you."

Here is the zoom link to join: https://berkeley.zoom.us/j/9374214959

We hope to see you there!

Some questions to think about:
- how do you feel about the ED series, and how can the ED4's be improved?
- how should CED work to improve the academic community of Urban Studies?
- What hard skills are important (GIS, sketchup, etc)? what about soft ones (AC classes, community development, etc)?
- How do we work toward a curriculum that with a hierarchal class structure that builds of previous classes?

Help BUSSA greet the incoming Dean of CED!!

Join us for a brief meeting this Monday, March 9, at 6:30 pm at Strada Cafe to discuss BUSSA’s agenda for the town hall with incoming dean Vishaan Chakrabarti. The town hall with soon-to-be Dean Vishaan Chakrabarti was canceled because of the COVID-19.

We, of course, don't want to encourage non-essential public gatherings so we want to help cultivate this discussion remotely. Please feel free to use this post as a conversation board for input you would like to share with Chakrabarti eventually, or any questions. Also, feel free to message this page.

The new Dean coming in is a great time to get everyone involved in BUSSA and get some more Urban Studies love in the department!

Some background:

The news of his announcement was made with a lot of excitement, as he is also establishing an outpost of his Practice for Architecture and Urbanism in California with the move. Chakrabarti will be the college’s first practitioner Dean since Will Wurster, balancing his work at CED with his firm. Check out this interview following the news of his appointment. In this new role, Chakrabarti will succeed Jennifer Wolch, who stepped down at the end of the spring 2019 term after 10 years at the helm of the CED.

Here's a TED Talk that serves as an overview to his philosophies in
urbanism:

There's a creeping sameness in many of our newest urban buildings and streetscapes, says architect Vishaan Chakrabarti. And this physical homogeneity -- the result of regulations, mass production, safety issues and cost considerations, among other factors -- has blanketed our planet in a social and....
