Zaytuna College

Zaytuna College Zaytuna College is a Muslim liberal arts college located in Berkeley, California.
(857)

In 2009, Zaytuna College was founded in Berkeley, CA, with a mission that called for grounding students in the Islamic scholarly tradition as well as in the cultural currents and critical ideas shaping modern society. Today, we welcome students from across the world to both our BA and MA programs. Our BA program is in liberal arts and Islamic studies, providing students with a foundation in the in

tellectual heritage of two major world civilizations: the Islamic and the Western. For our MA program we offer two tracks in Islamic texts: Islamic theology and philosophy or Islamic law and legal theory. This program aims to provide students with higher-level access to the Islamic tradition through a guided course of study in Islam’s primary sources. At Zaytuna College, we have set out to do our best at restoring the broad-based, holistic tradition of what in the West was called the liberal arts and in the Muslim civilization was known as comprehensive studies. These civilizations share common aims: to think deeply and systematically about the world (creation), to ponder its ultimate source and purpose (Creator), and to live ethically in the course of our individual and collective lives (spirituality and politics). Ultimately, the purpose of education from an Islamic perspective—and for Zaytuna College—is to aid students in their own pursuit and discovery of the truth, inculcating the love of beauty, truth, and goodness in a human being.

On behalf of everyone at Zaytuna College, Eid Mubarak to you and yours. May all your devotional acts be accepted and may your faith and humanitarian spirit be revived.

As we celebrate the Feast of Sacrifice, may we also be inspired by our Prophet ﷺ, who was the most patient and grateful of servants, to increase our patience and gratitude in challenging times. May we follow His blessed example by being charitable with one another, caring for the vulnerable among us, and supporting the good work of others.

Your support enables us to provide an exceptional education grounded in devotion and prepare the next generation for ethical leadership and contribution to the greater good.

As we leave the sacred first 10 days of Dhu'l Hijjah, let us reflect on the transformative power of gratitude.

In this short reflection by Ustadha Hosai Mojadiddi, we are reminded that gratitude is more than a feeling, it is recognizing the Giver in every gift. When we live in a state of gratitude, we begin to see the good in every moment and transform the mundane into the sacred. Watch the full clip here: https://go.zaytuna.edu/4dMJGxx

The Prophet ﷺ said: “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.”

Giving during these blessed days is more than a donation. It is an opportunity to support sacred knowledge, show gratitude, and help preserve faith and character for those seeking an education rooted in the Islamic tradition. May Allah accept our worship, purify our intentions, and make us among those who are beloved to Him. Ameen.

These ten days of Dhu’l Hijjah are a sacred opportunity to draw nearer to Allah through prayer, fasting, remembrance, charity, and service to others.

In this short reflection, by Dr. Asad Tarsin, we are reminded of a beautiful hadith: among the most beloved servants to Allah are those who are most beneficial to His creation.

These blessed days call us to increase in worship and to seek out ways to bring relief, ease, and benefit to others. A sincere gift, a kind word, a burden lifted, or a need fulfilled can become a means of nearness to Allah, inshallah.

In this short reflection, Dr. Abdullah Ali reminds us to honor these 10 days of Dhu'l Hijjah through considering the family of faith around whom the Hajj was initiated as well as what we can learn from the Qur’an and hadith about strengthening bonds of kinship in our own families.

As pilgrims make their way through the rites of Hajj, those of us at home are also called to draw nearer to our Lord through the deeds most beloved to Him in these days.

May Allah accept our worship, forgive our shortcomings, increase us in gratitude, and allow these blessed days to transform our hearts, inshallah.

Giving during these sacred days is more than a donation. It is an investment in sacred knowledge, future generations, and the preservation of faith and character. Every act of generosity, no matter how small, carries immense weight with Allah in these days.

The first ten days of Dhu’l Hijjah are a sacred opportunity to return to Allah with sincerity, repentance, and renewed devotion.

In this short reflection, Ustadh Feraidoon Mojadedi reminds us of the blessings of tawbah and the mercy available to those who turn back to their Lord. Watch the full reflection here: https://go.zaytuna.edu/3RYeR1q

As these blessed days invite us to increase in prayer, fasting, charity, remembrance, and dua, they also call us to seek forgiveness, repair what we can, and ask Allah to purify our hearts.

May Allah allow us to receive these days with humility, accept our worship, forgive our shortcomings, and draw us nearer to Him.

In these blessed days of Dhu’l Hijjah, when we remember the devotion and sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, we were reminded of courage and sacrifice in our own time.

Earlier this week, our brothers Amin Abdullah, Nadir Awad, and Mansour Kaziha put themselves between attackers and a school filled with teachers and children in San Diego. Their courageous actions saved many lives and reflected one of the highest acts of humanity: giving oneself for the sake of others.

Allah tells us in the Qur’an “And if anyone saved a life it would be as if he saved the lives of all people” (Qur’an 5:32).

Please keep our brothers, their families, and all those suffering around the world in your duas. May Allah grant them the highest ranks, bring comfort to their families, protect our communities, and allow sound knowledge and virtue to dispel the darkness of ignorance and cruelty.

On the same day a new moon marked the beginning of Dhu’l Hijjah — the month of pilgrimage — we celebrated our 2026 graduates and offered them wisdom and prayers for the next stage of their journey. Graduation is a time to reflect and give thanks — first to our Creator, and then to everyone in our community who makes this day possible.

Here’s graduate speaker Abdel Fattah Bauer-Gauss reflecting on singular education: https://go.zaytuna.edu/4dpuh7r

The first ten days of Dhu’l Hijjah are a blessed time to increase in worship, remembrance, fasting, and charity.

In this reflection, by Dr. Jawad Qureshi, we are reminded that sadaqah is not only a means of supporting those in need. It is also a means of purifying our own wealth and drawing nearer to Allah. Watch the full reflection: https://go.zaytuna.edu/4dY3ZsZ

The Prophet ﷺ taught that charity does not decrease wealth, and that we should hasten to give, for charity stands in the way of calamity. As pilgrims turn toward the House of Allah, those of us at home can also seek closeness to Him through sincere worship and generous giving.

In this short reflection, Dr. Ali Ataie reminds us of the spiritual significance of these blessed days and the importance of increasing in dua, recitation of the Qur’an, remembrance, and sincere worship.

Whether you are preparing for Hajj or observing these days from home, do not let this season of mercy pass by unnoticed. Watch the full video and take a moment to reflect on how you hope to spend these blessed days, inshallah: https://go.zaytuna.edu/4dXH7tF
