Bears Beyond Bars

Bears Beyond Bars Bears Beyond Bars is a student organization at U.C.

Berkeley that tutors inmates in local jails and reads and distributes books to children waiting to visit their relatives in jail. Berkeley that is run through the Alameda County Library with the support of the Cal Corps Public Service Center. Members who are 20 years of age or older and pass a security clearance are offered the opportunity to tutor inmates at Glenn Dyer and Santa Rita Jails in Oak

land and Dublin, respectively. Interested persons above 18 years of age can participate in Start with a Story, a second program through which students read and distribute books to children waiting to visit their relatives in jail. Both the jail tutoring and Start with a Story components of Beas Beyond Bars collect books for donation to the Alameda County Library throughout the semester and host events to increase awareness of the issues facing incarcerated and previously incarcerated persons.
