NSBE works. As members and leaders, we know this anecdotally, but one study quantified NSBE’s impact on graduation rates. In their recent submission to the American Society for Engineering Education, Monique Ross of Purdue University and Susan McGrade, Ph.D. of the Indiana Institute of Technology found that 82 percent of black students who were NSBE members at a Midwestern university graduated within six years, compared with only 7.7 percent of non-NSBE, African-American engineering students. Why are you an engineer? In making the decision to major in engineering, I’m sure many of you at least considered earning potential, even if that wasn’t your primary motivation. However, a recent report from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce shows that African Americans tend to be concentrated in the lowest-paying majors. Given the vocational consequences of a college major, this pattern presents a significant economic issue for black families. [ 526 more words ]

NSBE Lehigh will be represented at the Annual Conference in Ghana this week by our former chapter senator and current NEB International Committee Finance Chair, Frederick Coleman!

Frederick R. Coleman is a Ghanaian born US citizen and a fourth-year Business Information Systems, Engineering and Africana Studies undergraduate at Lehigh University from Easton, Pennsylvania.
He is an undergraduate researcher working with the Digitizing Africa Project. The research project was launched in October 2014 and is focused on African developments of mobile networks and their economic and residential impact, and information security protocols and their effectiveness in protecting data.
Prior to his experiences in Africa, he participated in the Smart Spaces Project (NSF-REU sponsored) as part of the Lehigh University Mountaintop Project Initiative in the summer of 2014. He contributed to the research of ambient technology methods for making residential living easier. The project’s aims were in the development of automating existing household devices to create a “smart” environment with hands-free, voice operated devices. He serves as the NSBE International Committee Finance Chair, seeking resources and partnerships to support international chapters and their programs. At Lehigh he serves as the President of the Class of 2017, an Undergraduate Representative to the Council for an Equitable Community, and Senior Diversity Recruitment Intern for the Lehigh Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
