Exploring the Stars and Stripes of our river ecosystem! ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŸ โฃ
โฃ
Our lab has been tagging striped bass for years, but now 4+1 student Ben Gowell is leading the charge with an additional 32 tags to uncover more secrets. Weโ€™re analyzing river movements via telemetry in conjunction with scale cores for chemical signatures to pinpoint their natal estuaries. Follow along as we track their annual journey! ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Earlier this week we were lucky enough to have Micah Keiffer, a USGS research fishery biologist, return to assist our lab with gill netting and acoustic tagging Atlantic sturgeon!

With Micahโ€™s extensive experience and oversight lab members we were able to take measurements and assist Dr. Mohan in internally acoustic tagging 5 sturgeon.

Using our river and coastal reciver array we hope to explore how they are utilizing our area in the coming years.

This research was conducted under NMFS permit number 20347 and DMR SL2024-23-00

Jessie Maguire is our new graduate research assistant! She is originally from Ramsey, New Jersey and has recently graduated from Monmouth University with a BS in Marine and Environmental Biology and Policy, where she conducted movement studiesย on acoustically tagged shark species, including the Atlantic Angel shark (Squatina dumeril).ย

For her masterโ€™s studies, Jessie will be investigating changes in water temperature within the gulf of Maine due to climate change and consequently, the resulting distribution shifts of native groundfish species. She will be doing this through the use of historical temperature data, the deployment of in situ temperature loggers, and the creation of predictive models. Eventually, she will also conduct lab experiments to observe the ecological food web effects on black sea bass under predicted warming trends.

When Jessie isnโ€™t in the lab, you can find her at the beach or in the gym!
