Byron Marine Ecology Lab

The University of New England’s Byron Marine Ecology Lab is located in the Arthur P. Girard Marine Science Center at the mouth of the S**o River. We focus on monitoring the health of our local waters by working with industry partners in blue mussel aquaculture and kelp aquaculture. We have research projects conducted in S**o Bay and Casco Bay. These projects include studying the food web using stable isotope analysis; blue mussel histology to study parasites in the mussel tissue, stage the reproductive tissue and calculate ratios of storage tissue; nitrate reductase analysis to see how efficient kelp farms are at bioremediating nitrogen; using PCR and gel electrophoresis to verify Vibrio species found on kelp; analyzing phyotplankton, zooplankton, and particulate organic matter as food sources for blue mussels; determining methodology for micro-plastic research; & determining the bioavailability of lipids in kelp detritus as nutrients for blue mussels.
