UNE's Students in Sports Governance class recently welcomed special guest Jim Rooney to speak, one of the current owners of the Steelers organizations.

In addition to talking about his role with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Rooney also discussed sports policy development, diversity and equity within the NFL, and the “Rooney Rule," the league’s policy that requires teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching positions and other senior football operations jobs.

“You can have all the types of good policies that are designed to effectuate positive outcomes in companies, but you can’t legislate ethics. If people don’t follow through on policies, and if you don’t have enforcement consequences, then you get to a point where the governance side is ineffectual and people feel humiliated."

Today is the 36th National Girls & Women in Sports Day and 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX! In recognition of these milestones, special events are planned in Maine throughout the season.
Join Olympians & Leaders in Sport: Lessons in Mental Skills Gold Medal Training, next Thursday, February 10th at 7pm. This event is in partnership with Colby College Athletics, the Maine Sports Commission and is powered by our statewide Girls & Women in Sports Committee. Livestream will be provided by Colby College. Speakers' bios and additional event details including easy steps to attend this virtual event may be found at Maine Sports Commission Events.
Information about event being held at the University of New England on March 7th will be shared by February 11th. Hope you'll join in this nationwide NGWSD celebration established by the Women's Sports Foundation! !
