“I’m Makayla, I am a P3 and super excited to be this year’s president! I am from the very small town of Harbor Beach, Michigan. I currently work as an intern at Meijer Pharmacy but am unsure of what area of pharmacy I want to end up in. I am interested in specialty pharmacy, oncology, and inpatient pharmacy. I was on the Track and Field team at Ferris for 4 years and still enjoy running and staying active in my free time!”

While I’m still exploring my ideal career path, working in an inpatient hospital pharmacy has sparked my interest, and I’ve recently developed a growing interest in Long-Term Care. I joined SASP to explore the innovative and complex aspects of medications that slightly differ from the medications that we learn about in school! ◡̈”

Meet our secretary, Kaylin! Kaylin is a P3 and works at the Cancer and Hematology Centers in their infusion pharmacy and specialty pharmacy. A fun fact about Kaylin is that she is a crazy cat lady (she has 3 of them!) who loves to knit and read in her free time.

Hi everyone! I hope your summer is off to a fantastic start! The national SASP board is looking for applications for next year's National Executive Committee (NEC). The applications are due this Friday.
As part of the NEC, you'll interact with some of the key leaders in the specialty pharmacy space, and help your fellow SASP members; It looks fantastic on your CV! The only requirement for applying is that you are an existing member of SASP.
If you are interested in a career in specialty pharmacy after graduation, this is an incredible foot in the door!

Leqvio was recently FDA approved on January 7th, 2022. This drug helps lower LDL in patients with
ASCVD or hypercholesteremic by subcutaneous injections only twice a year. Leqvio is the first in its class
of interfering RNA treatment, it works by improving the livers’ natural ability to prevent the production
of a protein that plays a role in keeping circulating cholesterol levels high. Inclisiran is a new option to
lowering LDL in patients who may not have beneficial effects from statins or PCSK9 inhibitors. It’s a great
alternative to patients struggling to maintain adherence with self-administering medications.

GVHD is defined as Graft versus host disease. This condition occurs after an allogenic transplant. In chronic GVHD, the donated bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells view the recipients body as foreign, and the donated cells/bone marrow attack the body. "Nearly half of the people who develop chronic GVHD do not respond adequately to steroids—the current standard of care—making this life-threatening condition particularly challenging to treat" Great advancement in the field of specialty pharmacy!

The FDA approved ruxolitinib (Jakafi, Incyte) for chronic graft-versus-host disease after failure of one or two lines of systemic therapy in adults and children ages 12 years and older.

Hello everyone!
This drug isn't exactly new, but it is definitely an interesting one! Sublocade became FDA-approved on November 30th, 2017 for the treatment of opioid use disorder. Sublocade became the first subcutaneous injectable dosage form for buprenorphine. The use of the subcutaneous dosage form improves medication adherence to buprenorphine, as well as reduce the use of illicit opioid use.

Sublocade has a black box warning about intravenous use. Sublocade is a subcutaneous injection only. Due to the atrigel delivery system, administering Sublocade intravenously could lead to occlusion of the artery or embolus, eventually causing death. Because of this black box warning, Sublocade must be prescribed and dispensed as part of a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) to ensure the product is not distributed directly to patients. Sublocade is provided and administered by a trained health care professional.
