💡 The first nonprofit startup at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is redefining how cystic fibrosis care can be delivered in low-resource communities.

Hector Gutierrez, M.D., professor at the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, founded Dream a Little Dream, UAB’s first nonprofit startup. Its mission is to improve cystic fibrosis care for patients in underserved regions by helping clinical teams work together more effectively.

Research tools developed by University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) investigators, from antibodies to specialized cell lines, have become essential resources for laboratories and companies across the research community. These tools, many of which were created decades ago, continue to drive discovery while generating valuable revenue for the university.

The Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (HIIE) manages these research materials by licensing them to companies that distribute them to the broader research community. Unlike most patent licenses, which are typically exclusive, research tools such as antibodies are often made available to multiple companies.

❓ How are UAB-owned inventions licensed to others to use?
➡️ The agreement for allowing commercial use of a UAB-owned invention by a company outside of UAB is a “license.” If UAB grants a license, the company can develop and sell products based on the invention. The Harbert Institute will typically keep the inventor(s) informed during the licensing process, but licensing negotiations are independently managed by HIIE.

The Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship recently created a new role, Faculty Liaison, to strengthen collaboration between University of Alabama at Birmingham researchers and the technology transfer team.

Trey Melazzo earned his PharmD from Samford University and completed his MBA at UAB. Before joining the Harbert Institute, Trey worked at Southern Research as program manager for Station 41’s Therapeutics Accelerator. His goal has always been to make a broader impact on patient care.

Electric Indigo LLC, a University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) spinout, has partnered with local medical technology development center Hardware Park to develop new light-emitting eyewear designed to suppress the progression of myopia, or nearsightedness, in children.
