📣 Research Participants Needed

A UAB Occupational Therapy doctoral student is recruiting licensed health care practitioners for a capstone research study examining how clinicians differentiate between Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD).

Eligible participants are invited to complete a brief 30-minute online survey. Your insights can help advance understanding of feeding disorders in pediatric practice.

The final stop of the South Africa study abroad experience took the group to Aquila Game Reserve for two days of safari adventures and wildlife encounters. Surrounded by stunning landscapes and incredible animals, students celebrated the end of a journey filled with new perspectives, meaningful experiences, and lasting memories.

Days 8 & 9 | Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦

The final days in Cape Town brought together many of the themes that shaped this study abroad experience. Students experienced the beauty of South Africa from the summit of Table Mountain, learned from leaders advancing disability rights and participation through Shonaquip Social Enterprise, reflected on the lasting impact of apartheid at the District Six Museum, and joined Sisanda Fundaytion in using play to promote connection and healthy child development.

A sincere thank you to the organizations, storytellers, professionals, and community members who shared their time, knowledge, and experiences throughout this journey.

Our education abroad group has had an incredible first week in Cape Town, South Africa! 🇿🇦

Over the past seven days, students have:
✨ Explored Cape Town's rich history and culture
✨ Learned from the inspiring Grannies at GAPA
✨ Visited hospitals and occupational therapy programs across the city
✨ Connected with community health initiatives through the Cipla Foundation
✨ Experienced the beauty of the Cape Coast, penguins, and Seal Island
✨ Reflected on South Africa's history at Robben Island
✨ Learned about culture, occupation, and community at the !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre

This journey has already been filled with learning, connection, reflection, and unforgettable experiences.

Our education abroad group has arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, and completed their first full day of exploring, learning, and experiencing just some of what the city has to offer.

Faculty member Rachel Ashcraft shared this reflection in the official blog:
"It is difficult to describe the intersection of innovation, culture, history, and natural wonder that is all around us. In one walk today, we passed the Waterfront Clock Tower, original stonework and cannons from when the Dutch controlled the harbor, bustling markets with artisan creations, and streets bursting with song and dance. All the while, the ocean was to our left and Table Mountain was to our right."

Rachel will continue sharing daily reflections and highlights from the group's experiences and community engagement across South Africa.
