UAB International Mentors is a program that provides incoming international students with valuable information about UAB, Birmingham, and the United States. International Mentors serve the UAB international community by offering programming, support, and assistance to better meet the needs of incoming new students.

“IM is family. It has really become my built-in support system full of love these past few years. This team is where I learned how to be a leader and where I was given the space to grow while learning so much from my own mentee groups. IM gave me a team that helped me find something bigger than myself, and a purpose that I take with me into every future interaction.

I’m going to miss my team and the people so big. From early morning orientation prep to late-night meetings, I’ve loved it all. Those little laughs and especially those exhausted moments lying on the couches are the memories I’ll hold onto the most.

My advice for college: make time for the things you love. Find what fills your cup and really go all in. Build real connections with you team and be open to learning from the people around you. These moments shape you - have so much fun!! 💙💙” - Harsh*ta

“One thing I’ll miss most about IM is the team environment. I love how everyone comes together to run events, and the atmosphere is always so welcoming and friendly. I’ll also really miss my mentees. I’ve made some amazing friends and met so many great people through this experience.

My favorite IM moment was during training when Moyad had such a hard time getting everyone’s name right. I could not stop laughing.

One piece of advice I have for incoming mentees and mentors is to make an effort to meet in person instead of just following up over text. The connections you build will be stronger, and you’ll get so much more out of the experience. Also, don’t forget to keep your Teams updated!” - Vinaya

“Being a part of IM has been one of the most meaningful parts of my journey. It gave me more than just responsibilities - it gave me a sense of community, purpose, and friendships that I’ll carry long after this chapter ends.

What I’ll miss the most is the people. The small conversations, the behind-the-scenes chaos before events, the laughter, and the feeling of being part of something bigger than myself. IM wasn’t just an organization - it was a space where I grew, stepped out of my comfort zone, and found my place.

My favorite IM moment has to be seeing everything come together during events, watching ideas turn into experiences, and seeing students genuinely enjoy what we created. Those moments made all the effort worth it.

If I had one piece of advice, it would be this: show up fully. Don’t just do the bare minimum - take initiative, connect with people, and make the most of every opportunity. IM gives you exactly what you put into it.

“I will miss all the students and mentors! Recently there have been a lot of students who have recognized me outside of IM and it has been really sweet connecting with them and seeing how the program has been impactful. My favorite IM moment(s) this past year has been mentoring my mentor group. They are such a sweet group of people and I have really enjoyed getting to know them individually and seeing their growth throughout the year! I will miss each of them and I can’t wait to see how they will continue to grow throughout the years! My one piece of advice would that everything is a season, the good and the bad. Nothing is forever and that is honestly a gift that allows us to treasure what we have in the moment” - Catherine

“I will miss the whole IM team and all the memories we shared during our events. There was countless weeks when I would be stressed about an exam or paper, but I could always come to our IM events and get my mind off things while getting to make new connections with international students. One of my favorite memories was probably the Holi event that we hosted. We always had a big Holi event back in Huntsville where I grew up and getting to experience the festival in Birmingham was special. My biggest piece of advice to anyone is that you only get one chance to go to undergrad so make new friends, have fun, and don’t stress about things you can’t control” - Paresh

It is picnic weather! The International Mentors are having a picnic on the green, where we will have games like Jenga, ladder ball, corn hole, Connect 4, and kickball. And what is a picnic without some light refreshments. Be sure to come have fun with the Mentors!
