Southeastern Branch ASM Annual Meeting

Microbial Dynamics and Infection

Nov 30 (Fri) to Dec 2 (Sun), 2018

LOCATION: Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA

MEETING OVERVIEW: The meeting theme, Microbial Dynamics and Infection, envelops the field's emerging understanding of how microbe-microbe interactions drive key functional outcomes, including the pathology of microbe-host systems, as well as environmental biochemical cycles. The Southeastern region, including the Atlanta area, has a strong group of researchers working in this space, and we are excited to showcase their important work.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE: September 1, 2018, 5:00 pm ET

A member and officer Sarah Jeanne Adkins has made it to the final round of the American Society of Microbiology agar art contest. Check it the art and give it a "like"!

I Think, Sarah Adkins, Jeff Morris.

Charles Darwin jotted down the world’s first phylogenetic tree as an offhand speculation in one of his journals. His tree of life, famously annotated “I think...”, provided profound insight about evolutionary divergence. Here, the bacteria Chromobacterium violaceum does a real-time performance of Darwin’s idea. The white lines, unpigmented mutant of the purple lines, begin to appear. Over time, revertant mutants appeared in the white lines and the purple pigment gave them a fitness advantage that let them eventually overrun their colorless ancestors. Taken together, the pictures of this plate, after 48 hours (left) and one week (right), show that agar art is not only able to act as a medium of aesthetic beauty but can also meaningfully contribute to the canon of scientific knowledge. At least, we think so.
