Build caring communities for learning and working with each other, with students, and with the people we serve. Accept and value diversity; we appreciate differences in people, fami

lies, and ideas. Convey that every family has value and that learning should take place in an environment of mutual respect and tolerance. Provide opportunities to learn how to help people live and work in caring relationships, families, organizations, and communities. Facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and skills that will help people resolve individual, interpersonal, family, organizational, and social problems. We want to spend today highlighting two individuals whose dedication and impact make a difference in the lives of our students every day: Carolyn Ballard and Sarah Jarrett, our HDFS academic advisors! Carolyn is the advisor for Human Development majors and Sarah is the advisor for Early Childhood Development and Education majors

Here are some reflections from Victoria Lael, an advanced instructor in HDFS, about Carolyn:
"I asked students in my class for feedback on Carolyn, and I got dozens of responses referring to her competence in helping students address complicated academic advising situations (switching majors, double majoring, preparing for specific careers, etc.) and just as many referring to how caring and kind she is. Many commented on the personal attention she gives students and how she remembers or notices things about them individually. She consistently helps provide students the information they need to stop stressing about their academic planning and put their energy toward their academics."

and Sarah:
"In addition to her familiarity with VT's academic policies and requirements, Sarah also has in-depth knowledge of Virginia State Teaching Licensure requirements. Also, she advises students from a variety of majors (all planning to teach), which adds to the difficulty of her work. She is incredibly knowledgeable and does an amazing job keeping track of so much detailed information. Students she advises comment on her friendliness, her quick response times, and her ability to help students figure out the best path for their goals. One student said, "She always makes me feel less stressed." Another said, "She's been extremely patient, understanding, and someone know I can always talk to and be completely honest
with without feeling judged."

Congratulations to one of our amazing HDFS undergraduate Spring 2026 graduates, Jalyn White! Jalyn has shared her experience with undergraduate research below:

"I have been involved in undergraduate research in the Learning and Development Lab here at Virginia Tech for five semesters. I joined during the spring semester of my freshman year to gain knowledge and hands-on experience with research, while still being unsure if it was something I would truly enjoy. Over the past five semesters, I have not only learned a great amount about the research process, but I have also grown tremendously as a student and individual. Throughout my experience, I have developed a deep passion for research and further developed my skills in asking thoughtful questions and critical thinking. Learning how to dig deeper into topics that interest me had a significant impact on my experience here at Virginia Tech by helping me become a stronger advocate for myself and more confident in exploring new ideas. I am very grateful for the opportunity to have been involved in undergraduate research and am proud of the contributions I have made over the past several semesters. After graduating in May, I plan to take a gap year before applying to medical school, and my involvement in the Learning and Development Lab has inspired me to seek opportunities that continue to align with and support my interest in research."
