Enzymes are incredible tools for biotechnology, but they have a major vulnerability: many quickly lose activity and break down under acidic conditions. 🛡️🧪
In a new study published in Nanoscale, Dr. Wei Sun and the research team dive deep into how nanoscale polymer coatings can protect these vital biocatalysts.
The key takeaway? Simply making protective films thicker isn’t enough. Instead, the team discovered that the local charge density inside the material plays a major role in shielding enzymes from acid damage.
By understanding these exact design features, we can build more robust biotech systems—unlocking more resilient enzyme-based technologies for:
🔬 Biosensors
🏭 Biomanufacturing
🩺 Diagnostics
🌱 Sustainable biotechnology

🎓 Graduation Celebration Content with a Cause! 💙

When the celebrations wrap up, the giving back begins! A huge shoutout to biochemistry grad student Raksh*tha Hosahalli, who came up with the fantastic idea to donate the delicious leftover food from the graduation celebration to the Women's Resource Center.

Staff member Emily Simpson delivered the donation to ensure it got to where it was needed most. 📸 Pictured here: Kelly McCoy-Meade (right) and Eli Brown (left) gratefully accepting the delivery.

We love seeing our department, grads, and staff team up to support the community. Congratulations again, Raksh*tha, and thank you to everyone involved for turning a celebration into an opportunity to give back! 🥳✨

🥳Well done, Helle Aronson, for successfully defending her Master’s Thesis today, May 13th! 🎓

Helle presented her impressive research on the thermal biology of Aedes and Culex mosquitoes. It’s been inspiring to students and the department to see her hard work culminate in such a strong defense. Such important work for understanding disease vectors!

A big shoutout to her advisor, Dr. Chloé Lahondère. Well done, Helle! 🦟🌡️
