About Us
Monuments Across Appalachian Virginia is looking to reimagine what constitutes a monument while documenting and commemorating histories and experiences that have been silenced, denied, or excluded. Across a three-year period, MAAV anticipates supporting six to ten new monuments with a focus on social justice, labor and environmental movements, and Appalachian diversity with regard to race, ethnicity, indigeneity, national origin, gender expression, sexuality, and more.

We are thrilled by the announcement of our expansion!

MAAV intern Christian put it beautifully.
“Each of the nine MAAV monument projects and their community leaders have demonstrated great tenacity in their commitment to keeping alive local histories and culture, and we are honored to witness and support their endeavors, which have been a catalyst for things to come both at home and across the region.”
- Christian Crawley
