Congratulations to Lillian McIntosh for being awarded the 2026 Best WEFTEC Program Abstract Award!

Her research challenges the conventional belief that high dissolved oxygen is needed for effective biological phosphorus removal. These findings could help wastewater treatment plants improve nutrient removal while reducing the energy and resources required for aeration.

Md Shadman Sakib was selected for the inaugural WHOI/NASA Summer School in Sea Level Science. His work on compound coastal flooding and vertical land motion is helping engineers to understand how sea level change impacts coastal communities.

Three members of the Virginia Tech community recently contributed their expertise to the inaugural Summer School in Sea Level Science at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

Virginia Tech recently lost one of its preeminent scholars and educators, with the passing of James Michael “Mike” Duncan, University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Virginia Tech Civil & Environmental Engineering.

For more than four decades, Mike was a defining figure in Virginia Tech’s world-class geotechnical engineering program. Christopher Dianora ’10, M.S. ’11 has a built a career with Delve Underground designing some of the world’s most complex underground infrastructure — from New York City’s water supply system to major tunnel projects in Australia.

His Virginia Tech education taught him to think beyond the textbook and that's something that has been invaluable in his underground engineering career.
