It's that time of semester again... charette time!✨ At Virginia Tech our Landscape Architecture Program always kicks off with a full-program design charette, from 1st years to PhD students. Most charettes involve community engagement, which is such an important part of landscape architecture. This year we worked with the Town of Blacksburg to imagine more opportunities for art and social gathering spaces downtown. This was a great way to jump right into studio with lots of collaboration, brainstorming, and creation!

Studio life is officially in full swing! Our LAR2164 students kicked off their very first project by getting completely hands-on. Using just paper and action words inspired by earth-shaping forces, they sculpted entirely unique, imaginary landscapes.

After bringing their own paper worlds to life, they sketched moments in their classmates' work, reimagining these paper landforms as real, immersive moments in nature.

This study abroad was such an amazing experience in design, culture, and observation of the landscape. After one month across Europe, many crucial lessons about landscape architecture, industrial design, and architecture were gained. Our students are very grateful for all that they learned and are excited to bring it back to Blacksburg!

It's a wrap. The summer 2026 education abroad study in western Europe ended this morning. Last night, the team shared sketchbooks and reflections on 'design-learning' and their thoughts on the impact of what they've seen and experienced on their roles as a designer.
