From hand‑carving a guitar to crafting custom furniture, Payson Kelley is putting ideas into action in the BuildLAB!

A treasured part of the Virginia Tech Myers-Lawson School of Construction the BuildLAB embodies the university’s philosophy of applied learning by fostering innovation through exploration, curiosity, and hands‑on discovery. Equipped with professional‑grade tools and computer‑controlled machinery, the lab allows students to design and build across materials and scales.

A building construction and commercial real estate double major, Kelley has used the BuildLAB to better understand the craft behind the work, preparing him to be a construction leader who knows what it takes to build.

From an idea sketched on the back of a football program to a nationally recognized leader in construction education, Virginia Tech Myers-Lawson School of Construction is celebrating 20 years at Virginia Tech.

Founded through the vision and philanthropy of A. Ross Myers ’72 and John R. Lawson II ’75, MLSoC was built by the industry, for the industry. By bringing together engineering, construction, and business, the school prepares graduates to step into leadership roles from day one.
