The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has come a long way since Virginia Tech's modest beginnings when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College first opened its doors in 1872. Through its land-grant mission of research, teaching, and extension, the college has been instrumental in helping agriculture and other life science industries make significant strides in improving people's lives.

Today's College is adapting to society's expectations and needs by focusing its resources and efforts on improving human health and nutrition, sustaining agriculture and the environment, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels, and developing cures for devastating and debilitating diseases.

Hokies are helping shelter cats become more adoptable. 🧡🥹

Students in Virginia Tech's shelter cat behavior and welfare class teach cats to nose-target a wand, sit on cue, spin in a circle, load into a carrier, sit on a mat for cooperative care, and bump a fist with their paw, using food rewards paired with clickers for positive reinforcement.

An Agricultural and Extension Education major with a minor in Leadership and Social Change, Carly focused her time at Virginia Tech on storytelling, leadership, and community impact.

Through internships with the Virginia FFA Foundation and the National FFA Organization, she discovered her passion for sharing the stories of agricultural education and the students it serves.

On campus, she's stayed involved as a leader in the Collegiate Young Farmers and Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow organizations, and is a member of Alpha Tau Alpha.

After graduation, Carly will serve as Communications Manager and Executive Assistant for the Virginia FFA Foundation. Long term, she hopes to return home to Highland County and continue her family’s farming legacy.
