Featured new book: CUBAN MID-CENTURY DESIGN: A MODERNIST REGIME, by Abel González Fernandez, Laura Mott, and Andrew Satake Blauvelt (Cranbrook Art Museum/Rizzoli, 2024)

Published to accompany the exhibition of the same name held at Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., July 11-September 22, 2024

The first book, accompanying a traveling exhibition, dedicated to Cuban mid-century design anchored by an under-acknowledged collection of graphic design, prototypes, and furniture, much of which has never been exhibited outside the island or published.

Primarily focused on the post-revolutionary era of Cuba from the late 1950s through the 1970s, this volume brings together a prolific cohort of artists, designers, and architects that materialized the ideology of their time, and ultimately narrate the country’s arc from revolutionary promise to authoritarian retrenchment.

Design and architecture played an important role in shaping the country's identity and cultural expression during this time period. Consisting of nearly 100 works, including approximately 50 pieces of furniture, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue features seminal objects of functional design, architectural renderings, speculative prototypes for a “design for all” ethos, and key examples of art and graphic design that contributed to the zeitgeist of the era. The book also includes several examples by contemporary Cuban artists and designers who explore how this post-revolutionary aesthetic survives today. – Publisher’s website

Featured new book: SCOTT HOCKING: DETROIT STORIES (Cranbrook Art Museum, 2022)

Published to accompany the exhibition of the same name held at Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., November 4, 2022-March 19, 2023

"Scott Hocking: Detroit Stories is the first museum retrospective of the artist, who has been living and working in Detroit for more than twenty-five years and who was born in the adjacent community of Redford Township, Michigan. Hocking's acclaimed work spans sculpture and installation, photography and video, and is known for its repurposing of existing materials and found objects, which the artist uses in site-specific projects that delve into local histories and conditions of place. Hocking gained international attention for a series of works undertaken in various abandoned buildings around Detroit, where he would assemble large-scale sculptures from the surrounding detritus. Emerging in the 2000s to become one of "Detroit's most important contemporary voices and chroniclers, Hocking possesses an embodied knowledge of the city and its idiosyncratic histories. While rooted in the city of Detroit, Hocking has also produced projects in different places around the world, responding to the particular circumstances of each location. His unique artistic process combines aspects of urban archeology-- uncovering layers of history, meaning, and memory--with a historian's sense of discovery and a writer's craft of storytelling." -- museum website

Featured new book: NICK CAVE: FOROTHERMORE (Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, 2022)

(Nick Cave is a 1989 alumnus of the Cranbrook Academy of Art Fiber Department)

"The definitive volume on the ever-evolving and transformative work of the Chicago-based artist, Nick Cave: Forothermore highlights the way Cave’s practice has shifted and continues to shift in response to our history and current moment of cultural crisis. Including several new, never-before-seen works, the book shows an artist at the height of his power. Addressing topics ranging from art history to social justice, Nick Cave: Forothermore includes essays from Naomi Beckwith, Romi Crawford, Antwaun Sargent, Malik Gaines, Krista Thompson, and Meida Teresa McNeal. Punctuating these contributions are interviews with the artist exploring his life, work, and teaching practice, as well as a roundtable discussion between Cave and dancer Damita Jo Freeman, musician Nona Hendryx, and publisher Linda Johnson Rice on Cave’s art and influences, as well as pivotal cultural phenomena from Soul Train to Ebony magazine. Nick Cave: Forothermore reveals the way art, music, fashion, and performance can help us envision a more just future." -- MCA Chicago website

Featured new book: OLGA DE AMARAL: TO WEAVE A ROCK (Arnoldsche Art Publishers, in association with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 2020)

The exhibition is on display at Cranbrook Art Museum, October 30, 2021-February 13, 2022.

"A visual artist based in Bogotá, Colombia, Olga de Amaral (b. 1932) is one of the most recognized names in craft and Latin American art. Drawing on techniques like plaiting and wrapping and materials such as horsehair and gold leaf, Amaral’s transformative woven sculptures result from a lifetime of experimentation.

OLGA DE AMARAL: TO WEAVE A ROCK traces Amaral’s career over five decades, features more than forty key pieces of work, and examines the artist’s oeuvre through the lens of contemporary and fiber art. This publication celebrates an artist who for decades has gracefully produced across traditional divides: fine art and craft, local and universal, ethereal and material." -- publisher's website

Olga de Amaral studied weaving at Cranbrook Academy of Art 1954-1955.

Featured new book: "WITH EYES OPENED: CRANBROOK ACADEMY OF ART SINCE 1932 (Cranbrook Art Museum, 2020) is the first book to expansively chronicle the history of this influential and singular art school. Opened in 1932, the Academy offered a revolutionary approach to art education in America, profoundly affecting the worlds of architecture, art, craft, and design. Remarkably, its radical approach to learning—which centered both artists and students—continues today, decades after other progressive art schools such as the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College have closed. This 624-page book includes profiles of 200 artists associated with the Academy over more than eighty years. The culmination of a four-year research project, With Eyes Opened, includes not only those architects and designers who have long been associated with the Academy’s rightful designation as the 'cradle of mid-century modernism,' but also recuperates those voices—especially women and artists of color—who have added immensely to the fields of art and craft, in particular." -- Publisher's website
