NOBCChE IU Bloomington Chapter

NOBCChE IU Bloomington Chapter Our chapter strive to provide a support network on the Bloomington campus for current undergraduate To this end, our chapter is not for only black chemists.

In the Spring of 2007, the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE, pronounced “no-be-shay”) approved a student chapter at Indiana University. Now as the world becomes increasingly globalized and smaller, we believe that true success lies in our ability to manoeuvre our interconnected networks and embrace diversity in our thinking.

We just had our FIRST NOBCChE Movie Night! The movie?-'Dear White People' by American filmmaker, Justin Simien. Great fellowship & even greater discussion afterwards!! Thanks to our VP Meissa for organizing and providing the PIZZA/drinks & Adepeju for the assortment of candy

Justin Simien’s “Dear White People” explores the hypocrisy, awkward good will and unwitting racism that hamper relations between white and black students at a fictional Ivy League school.

"Outreach involvement is VERY important. When I was younger, I really didn't think about science as an option until I had a female science teacher in middle school and then an AWESOME chemistry teacher in high school…. some kids are not exposed to diversity in science and so can't identify with certain career fields."- Virginia (IUB NOBCChE President) **Email [email protected] and/or check out our website (www.indiana.edu/~nobcche/) to learn how you can be involved in outreach!

Science isn't just for one gender -- just ask the girls in Microsoft's new ad. Despite their young ages, they all have impressive scientific accomplishments under their belts. But they also admit that society hasn't created a world where their ac...

Whenever we have a minority student graduate, we celebrate. Why? According to NSF statistics from 2013, out of ALL PhDs received, ~15% are from minority individuals. Not surprising enough? Ok, lets give it another try and be a little more specific. Out of ALL Physical Science PhDs, ~29.3% are women (although women make up more than 50% of the workforce) and ~2.9% are Black or African American. Yesterday, our NOBCChE Vice President, Maissa M. Gaye, successfully defended her PhD in Analytical Chemistry. Congratulations Dr. Maissa M. Gaye! We are proud of you for all your hard work AND beating the odds!
