Earlier this spring, alumnus Caio de Souza (MA ’24) released a six-episode podcast: “Sonic Transductions: Lorenzo Dow Turner in Bahia”!

The series revisits the radioscape recorded by African American linguist Lorenzo Dow Turner in Salvador between 1940 and 1941 at Rádio Sociedade da Bahia. The six episodes investigate how these recordings document artists, repertoires, and sound worlds circulating between radio, the streets, and the press in Brazil during the 1930s and 1940s. At the same time, it proposes new ways of listening to these records, connecting archive, memory, and contemporary creation.

The project is a partnership between the Departments of Music at the Universidade do Estado do Amapá (UEAP) and the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA), funded by the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation, and broadcast by Rádio Batuta, from the Instituto Moreira Salles.

Special thanks to The Archives of Traditional Music at Indiana University for granting access to the audio materials used in the series.

Congratulations to PhD student Lamont Pearley, who was featured in the Blues Festival Guide (pictured here) for his work at the Jack Dappa Blues Heritage Preservation Foundation!
