Aurelio de la Vega Centennial Celebration Concert

A centennial celebration concert of the composer Aurelio de la Vega (1925-2022) featuring a broad range of works, including some of which have been rarely performed or never recorded.

The concert will count with the participation of Jack Allen (piano), Jose Campos (cello), Jackson Faulkner (alto saxophone), Diego Fernández Arraya (guitar), Luciana Giron Sheridan (soprano), José Hernández (violin), Aaron Lipsky (clarinet), Tatiana Morales (soprano), Carl Questad (piano), Thomas Shaw (cello), Kathleen Simunek (mezzo-soprano), Ben Tufte (piano), George Young (viola), Ai-ling (Lydia) Yu (piano), Dr. Aram Arakelyan (piano), and Dr. Bárbaro Martínez-Ruiz (declaimer).

The repertoire will include “Asonante” (1985), La muerte de Pan (1948), Adramante (1985), Soliloquio (1950), El encuentro (1950), Leyenda del Ariel criollo (1953), Sound Clouds (1975), Andamar-Ramadna (1975), Antinomies (1967), and “La nostalgia de ese mar” (2005).

The festival will include a colloquium talk by Dr. Belén Vega Pichaco (visiting scholar from Universidad de la Rioja, Spain); an exhibit at the Cook Music Library featuring a number of personal items provided by the de la Vega family and from the LAMC Special Collections; and a concert in Auer Hall that will include some of the composer’s most challenging and inventive pieces.

Aurelio de la Vega (1925-2022) was a Cuban-American composer, lecturer, essayist, and poet. He wrote numerous works in many forms and media and, from the early 1960s, was an active force in the United States musical scene. A recipient of the coveted Friedheim Award by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and a four-time Latin Grammy nominee, his music and aesthetic ideas have been discussed and analyzed extensively by critics and scholars in the United States and Latin America.

Featured Guest Performer: Alberto “Beto” Torrens

The Latin American Ensemble will perform and evening of music hailing from Cuba and Puerto Rico. The concert will highlight the percussion traditions of Cuba through the rhythms and songs of Palo and Rumba, led by guest artist Beto Torrens. Continuing to trace the influence of Bambula in the Caribbean, the ensemble will perform Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba songs set to the rhythms of Sicá, Yubá, Holandé, and Seis Corrido. The concert will end with a set of salsa and plena music featuring music by Cuban and Puerto Rican icons such as Eddie Palmieri, Cheo Feliciano, Orquesta Aragón, Rafael Cortijo, and Ismael Rivera.

Featuring solo works by Hermeto Pascoal (1936–2025) Luiz Gonzaga (1912–1989) Raimundo Nilton (b. 1958) Adriano Giffoni (b. 1959)

A native of Coari, Amazonas, Violinist and Music Educator Raimundo Nilton holds a Master of Music in Jazz Studies Performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, under the guidance of pianist and arranger David Loeb and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Brasília. He studied jazz and blues improvisation with John Blake, Matt Glaser, and Darol Anger, and studied free improvisation with Eugene Friesen at Berklee College of Music in Boston (1997). From June 1986 to July 2019, he was a tenured violin teacher at CEP (Brasília School of Music). He has taught and performed in several summer courses in Brazil and the United States, always promoting Brazilian music. His first CD, entitled "Violinando," sponsored by the Villa Lobos Foundation of the Manaus City Hall's Department of Culture, showcases various styles of Brazilian music, such as xote, baião, frevo, quadrilha, choro, samba, and bossa nova. It includes compositions by composers from Amazonas, Adriano Giffoni, and the great Hamilton de Holanda. His second CD, entitled "Dez Dias da Obra de Hermeto Pascoal," sponsored by the FAC (Art and Culture Support Fund) of the Federal District's Department of Culture, contains 10 songs from the "Calendar do Som" book. With an intention to expand the violin's repertoire beyond traditional classical music, he has been organizing material on various styles of Brazilian popular music to be published for violin and related instruments. youtube.com/user/rniltonviolin
