The Slavic and East European collection presented a pop-up library in the IU Libraries Moving Image Archive/Screening Room during the screening of the documentary “Resilience” on October 30, 2019. The pop-up library covered the topic of survival in Russia during the turbulent 20th century. The screening was a part of the “Remembering and Forgetting” Themester. Paul Richardson, IU Russian and East European Institute Distinguished alumnus, presented the documentary, which he co-directed and co-produced. The film is based on interviews with Russian centenarians born in 1917. A book with the same title (both in English and Russian) is also available at Wells Library.

Come to see the poster, Auspicious Monsters in Journey to the West 西游記, on the 8th floor of the Wells Library! The hundred-chapter novel, Xi you ji 西游记 (also known in English translations as Journey to the West, The Monkey King, etc.) is a fictional depiction of Xuanzang’s 玄奘 (596-664) pilgrimage in quest of sacred Buddhist scriptures in India in the 7th century.
The major characters in the novel, in addition to Xuanzang, are his four disciples: the Monkey 孫行者, the Piggy 猪八戒, Sha Wujing 沙悟净, and the white dragon horse.
The authorship of Journey to the West has been attributed to Wu Cheng’en 吴承恩 (字汝忠, 號射陽山人), a native of Shanyang Xian 山陽縣, Huai’an Fu 淮安府 (in present day northern Jiangsu Province江蘇).
