Have you missed out on our articles this summer? No worries. You can always find them on our explore page. https://engagedlearning.indiana.edu/explore-stories/index.html

There we feature students from all majors in their success and accomplishments.

Students who participate in engaging learning activities, such as service-learning, study abroad, undergraduate research, and internships, report beneficial outcomes such as:

• Deeper learning
• Increased interactions with faculty
• Greater exposure to diversity
• Opportunities to apply classroom learning to real-life settings
• Better understanding of self and clarification of future goals

That’s why it’s recommended that all students engage in at least two of these experiences before they graduate.

Highlighted stories from IU students and faculty that have participated in an engaged learning experience.

Did you miss out on our summer showcase of student research? 🤔

No worries, here is a recap of some photos taken at both the industry panel and the poster session at Wells Library.

Each summer, IUUR and the Office of Engaged Learning host a research poster event to showcase student work.

For the second summer, Dexter Wu-Corts is conducting a summer research project with Project STEM.

Project STEM is a summer internship program that invites high school students interested in science and engineering to be involved with research at a college level. The program is another one of the various summer research programs students can participate in.

Wu-Corts spent this summer working on two different projects with the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences Assistant Professor, Ehren Newman.

One project focuses on understanding the relationship between the hippocampus and the creation of memories by causing the hippocampus to express new genes that allow brain activity to be controlled with light. The light is used in the research to identify when the hippocampus is needed to complete a task.

The second project focuses on the relationship between brain activation dynamics and behavior.

Just like Wu-Corts, students can learn more about how to get involved and learn more about Project STEM.
Check out the story to hear more about Wu-Corts experience and how you can get involved too.

Meet Maya Federle:

Federle is just a high-school senior who got the opportunity this summer to do some research.
After applying to IU Project STEM, Federle was connected with a mentor and graduate researcher.

Project STEM is a summer program aims to offer university-level research experience to high school students interested in science and engineering.

Learn about Federle’s tasks consisting of transferring data, analyzing it, and understanding the experiment case by case.
