Don't miss out the film screening of "Al Son de Beno" o Friday!

"Beno’s Son” Film Screening with Filmmaker Ilán Lieberman
Friday, March 01; 3:30pm – 5:30pm
McCalla School Media Gallery (525 N. Indiana Ave)

Join us for a screening of Beno’s Son with the filmmaker, Ilán Lieberman! Following the screening, there will be a Q&A session.

Beno's Son, Ilán Lieberman's film debut, is an external voyage through the musical geography of Mexican sones ("son" is a genre of folk dance music), as well as an internal voyage through Ilán's father's tragedy, his feelings about it as a son, his relationships with his children, and the effect on his family. It is an homage to the beauty, intensity and variety of Mexico's musical legacy.

Beno's Son - Run time: 102 minutes
Language: Spanish with English subtitles

Join us for our first event of our Afrolatine Film and Performance Festival: Resonating Spirituality and Presence. Dr. Rebeca Hey-Colón will be giving a virtual lecture on her book "Channeling Knowledges: Water and Afro-Diasporic Spirits in Latinx and Caribbean Worlds" (University of Texas Press, 2023),which centers the multi-directional flows of water in contemporary Latinx and Caribbean cultural production as seen through the lens of Afro-diasporic religions. Through an interdisciplinary analysis that focuses on borders, gender, migration, and race, Hey-Colón’s study pushes at the boundaries of Latinidad by centering the generative role of Black epistemologies in the Americas.

Rebeca L. Hey-Colón is Assistant Professor of Latinx Studies in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Temple University. She specializes in Afro-Latinx and Caribbean studies.
