Clinical Optics Research Lab at Indiana University

Clinical Optics Research Lab at Indiana University We are a research facility within Indiana University School of Optometry, performing cutting edge contact lens and visual optics research.

CORL performs cutting-edge translational clinical optics research. The goal of this research is to improve the vision and clinical care of patients by achieving the following aims:

1. Evaluate and predict the success of refractive interventions and visual corrections.
2. Develop outcome measures to enhance a clinician’s ability to treat patients and the researchers ability to quantify improvement

s in care and determine causes for failures.
3. Improve ocular diagnostics for the detection, diagnosis, and correction of corneal disease.
4. Generate improvements in refractive interventions and visual corrections through controlled optical manipulations.

The CORL Team is excited to announce the publication of our new article on myopia in Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics (OPO). This article explores the impact of zone geometry of multizone lenses and offers valuable insights for myopia control. It’s great to see our diligent efforts come to fruition, and we are optimistic that our research will make significant contributions to future studies in this field.

Purpose Multizone contact lenses control myopia progression by proposed introduction of myopic defocus. This project investigated how much of the pupil area and how many dioptres of myopic defocus a...

What is the optical impact of dual focus (DF) contact lens in children during accommodation? – is the question that researchers from Clinical Optics Research Lab, Indiana University, Aston University and Coopervision answer in this paper. We measured the optics of children eyes treated with a dual focus and control monofocal contact lens using a high resolution aberrometer during active accommodation. The distribution of refractive states and defocus across the eye pupil together with the complex power distribution of the dual focus lens was well characterized by histogram and ternary plots. Key results include a) Myopic shift in the mean defocus across the pupil (from +0.75 D to -1.00 D) by the treatment optics of the DF lens, b) Reduction in the % of hyperopic defocus in the retinal image from 52% to 25% and associated increase in myopic defocus from 17% to 42% and c) unaltered accommodative behavior in children with the DF lens.

The DF contact lens did not alter the accommodative behavior of children. The treatment optics introduced myopic defocus and decreased the amount of hyperopically defocused light in the retinal image.
