As we celebrate the College’s 60th anniversary, we’re looking back at memorable moments from our history — including this 1996 visit from U.S. Vice President Al Gore. As a native Tennessean, his visit to our campus near the Tri‑Cities Airport drew more than 3,000 people. That fall, the Clinton/Gore ticket went on to win the election with 49.2% of the popular vote and 379 electoral votes.

Northeast State is proud to welcome Colonial Heights United Methodist Preschool as a partner in the College's Early Childhood Educator Apprenticeship Program.

Through the apprenticeship, employees can earn a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, an Early Childhood Education Technical Certificate and an associate degree in Early Childhood Education while continuing to serve children and families.

The partnership aims to strengthen the early childhood education workforce by supporting educator development and retention.

"Children's brains develop more rapidly from birth to age 5 than any other time in their lives," said Kaela Vines, director of Colonial Heights United Methodist Preschool. "I always like to say that we are the backbone for the current workforce of parents, building the foundations for the future workforce."

We're sharing the moments that meant the most to our community — one lived story at a time.

For Poppy Steele, one of those moments came in a welding booth.

As a CTE specialist, Poppy works with students from across the region as they take their first steps toward college and career success. While she treasures watching students grow and pursue their dreams, one memory stands out: a summer welding cohort that was determined to teach her a new skill.

Three Northeast State students claimed medals at the 2026 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. Northeast State students competed against students from across the nation at the conference held in Atlanta from June 1 to June 5.

Josie Tonies won the silver medal in the Job Skills Demonstration A category. Emmalee Johnson earned the silver medal in the Automotive Collision Appraisal Technology category. Corey Green claimed the bronze medal in the Facilithon (Facilities Management) category. Connor Blaylock finished fourth in the nation in the Architectural Drafting category.

​​Northeast State boasts eight gold-medal-winning state champions from the SkillsUSA Tennessee State Leadership and Skills Conference, held in March. The other four national competitors were Ella Parsons (Automotive Refinishing Technology category), Colton Osborne (CNC 2-Axis), James Shirk (CNC 5-Axis) and Will Cable (Technical Drafting).
