Esta obra de Mary Cassatt se llama “Mujer con un girasol”, un título que reconoce el papel central de esta flor, un símbolo del sufragio femenino en EE.UU., en la pintura. Sin embargo, durante mucho tiempo fue conocida como “Madre e hija”.

Nos explica la historiadora del arte, la Dra. Nikki Georgopoulos, que, para Cassatt, la maternidad era tan solo un aspecto de lo que significaba ser mujer, un concepto que iba directamente en contra de las creencias y expectativas de la sociedad victoriana, que dictaban que la mujer cuidara de la casa y los niños mientras que el hombre trabajaba.

Cassatt luchó a lo largo de su vida por los derechos de la mujer y recaudó fondos para la causa sufragista con la venta de su arte.
