This song sums up my book Wind Farm about as well as I can do in four minutes. Here's a photo of one of those blacktops and the fields near Flanagan, Illinois where I grew up, and where my brother and his wife are still farming.
I'm going to put the song link in the first comment, to see if that gets me more views!

With Porchfest approaching, I've been trying out songs, and played this old one again today. It's about my boyhood, spiders, revival meetings, and Dylan makes an appearance too.
You'll hear two voices, and 12-string guitar and mandolin. I played the guitar and sang the melody first, then added the harmony and mandolin on a second track, which I did over. It came out better the second time, but this is still a Saturday afternoon version, not a polished production. No autotune, I promise.

I’m really happy that Toby will be joining the Bluffton faculty full-time in the fall! When he visited as a prospective student, he asked me if he could become an SF writer at Bluffton. “Of course!” I said, fingers crossed. And it turned out to be true, though it required a lot of hard work and initiative as well as natural ability. So, who’s ready to follow in his footsteps?
