Theme: Blurred Lines: Breaking Barriers Between Higher Education & the “Real” World
For the second annual IDST Virtual Conference, we want to work at the ways that higher education informs, explores, invites, and hides routes to the “real world” beyond the boundaries of academia. We invite papers, roundtable ideas and presentations that push against the walls that separate college life - and work - and what students experience in life outside the confines of academia. Many undergraduate and graduate students work outside of school and/or off campus - how do these experiences contribute, rebut, or enforce their collegiate experiences? Furthermore, many students take internship courses that involve them in their larger university or disciplinary communities - how do these experiences shape their experience in and outside higher education? How do students design “degrees that work”?

Dr. Joan S. Taylor taught English at USCB from 1970-98. We extend our sympathies to Dr. Taylor's family, and we are grateful for the wisdom she shared with so many of USCB's students.

As we conclude the spring 2021 semester and the 2020-2021 academic year, we offer our congratulations and love to our 2021 graduating class of English, Secondary English, and Interdisciplinary Studies majors and to all our minors! Online; synchronous sessions Tu 12:15-1:30. Pre-req: ENGL 102, with a C or higher. English 222 (Creative Writing Across the Curriculum) very strongly encouraged. This is a 1 credit course and can be taken 5 times (for a total of 6 credits).

The Pen, a publication of the USCB Society of Creative Writers, features fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, short plays, and artwork created by USCB students. In this one hour credit course, students will solicit calls for creative works, evaluate submissions, design page and journal layouts, copyedit pieces accepted for publication, and organize strategies to publicize and promote the journal on campus and in the community. Beyond offering you firsthand experience for future internships and positions in editing and publishing, the culmination of the course each semester will be completion and publication of the journal itself.

What is “Digital Humanities''? What all does this umbrella term cover? IDST B439, the first version of USCB’s upcoming Digital Humanities minor, aims to find out what many many ingredients make up the puzzle of digital humanities. This course requires students to participate in individual and group projects, learn basic coding, and explore the various facets of the digital humanities world via guest lecturers from all around the USCB stage.
