The Micron School for Material Science invites you to join us June 4th at 9:00 am in RUCH 313 for Ajay Pratap’s dissertation defense! Ajay is working to design wearable electronics that harvest energy through the movement of the skin that they are applied to. This technology can be used as a completely non-intrusive way to obtain ECG/EMG data on human patients.

Another year, another incredible lineup of speakers. As the semester winds down, we want to say thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2025–26 MSMSE Seminar Series. From transistors designed one atom at a time to electrochemical memory systems, entropy-maximized catalysts to halide perovskites, this year's seminar series brought some of the brightest minds in materials science to Boise State.

Congratulations to David Whitten for earning his B.S. in Materials Science & Engineering this spring. David isn’t going far; he’ll be continuing at MSMSE this fall as a graduate student pursuing his M.S with research focused on developing computational modeling workflows.

David had this to say about his experience here:

“I could not be more grateful for the faculty and friends I have met through the Material Science program at Boise State. Completing this degree was both fun and possible because of the great people who I got to spend time with during the undergraduate program. I now have lifelong friends and relationships with amazing people who are all passionate about making the world a better place.”

Congratulations to David for all his hard work. We know that you will continue your future with dedication no matter what gets in your way.

Happy World Bee Day from MSMSE and a shoutout to nature's best engineers.

The honeycomb structure is praised in engineering for providing a combination of excellent strength and space efficiency while using a minimal amount of material. Engineers use this structure incredibly often and it can be found anywhere from aircrafts to cardboard to skis and snowboards. Thank you to bees for your incredible contribution to engineering!

In the spotlight, Jacob Olson! One of our most recent graduates from the Micron School of Material Science and Engineering.

Jacob had this to say about his experience at the MSMSE:

"My experience in MSMSE has been transformative. I came to college unsure of what I wanted to do or where my path would lead, but I found a community filled with supportive people, meaningful mentorship, and engaging research opportunities. The close-knit environment of this program has had a major impact on both my academic and personal development.

What I am most proud of from my undergraduate experience is not just my coursework or research accomplishments, but the personal growth I have experienced along the way. Through this program, I have gained confidence, strengthened my communication skills, and learned what it means to grow as a professional. While technical development is important, I have also learned the value of building lasting connections with peers, mentors, and faculty. I am excited to continue my education this fall and further develop my skills as a researcher, student, and future professional in the field of Materials Science and Engineering."

Welcome all participants to the Materials Science and Engineering Research Experience for Undergraduates!

Materials for society, the focus of this summers research experience for MSE students, is hosted by Dr. Rick Ubic and Dr. Zhangxian (Dan) Deng. It aims to give undergraduate students a state of the art lab experience while teaching them critical skills and knowledge in the realm of materials science.

Students will work with various mentors from a number of fields to assist them in their growth throughout their time, eventually presenting their findings at the Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research (ICUR) on July 15-16.

The participating labs are:

Advanced Nanomaterials & Manufacturing Laboratory (ANML) - Dr. Dave Estrada
Atomic Films Lab - Dr. Elton Graugnard
Advanced Materials Laboratory (AML) - Dr. Brian Jaques
Electrochemical Energy Materials Laboratory (EEML) - Dr. Hui (Claire) Xiong
