Boise State McNair Scholars Program

Boise State McNair Scholars Program We work with eligible undergraduate students in their last 2 years at BSU preparing them for graduate school. McNair is a federally funded college TRIO program.

We provide seminars, research and travel opportunities, and instruction on how to apply to and get paid to attend graduate school. The Boise State McNair Scholars Program serves students from groups underrepresented in graduate education and first generation college students from low-income backgrounds, preparing them for graduate studies.

✨McNair Graduate Highlight✨
Halima Hamud is a Spring 2022 McNair graduate who received a B.S. in Political Science.

During her time at Boise State, Halima was very involved in the campus community. She served as president of the Multilingual Student Alliance and founded The Circle of Excellence, both of which provide resources and workshops to young refugee students on campus and in the community. In 2021, she was named a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholar and was awarded the prestigious Harry S. Truman scholarship. 👏👏

This summer, Halima will be in Washington DC to intern for Catalogue for Philanthropy as a Nonprofit Program Manager. In the fall, Halima she will begin her master’s in Development Practices at the University of Minnesota where she received a full-tuition scholarship as well as the Minnesota Provost’s Professional Education Diversity Fellowship, which includes a stipend of $25,000. 🎉

Jasiel Ramirez is a Spring 2022 Boise State University McNair graduate who received a B.S. in Sociology and Ethnic Studies, with minors in Latin American Studies, Mexican-American Studies, Gender Studies, and an intermediate Spanish Certificate. 👏👏

In August, Jasiel will enter the Environmental Humanities MS program at The University of Utah. Jasiel was also awarded the Mellon Community Fellowship which consists of an annual stipend of $20,000, summer funding of $5,000, more funding for travel and research, health care benefit, and a full tuition waiver. 🎉

Congratulations Jasiel! We can’t wait to see where your new academic endeavors take you!

✨McNair Graduate Highlight✨

Dustin Dang Nguyen graduated this spring with a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering. In August, Dustin will be entering the Materials Science and Engineering PhD program at Arizona State University, where he was awarded the Dean’s Fellowship. The fellowship includes full tuition, health insurance, and $30,000 annual stipend for four years. Congratulations Dustin!

Gerardo Herrera Barriga graduated last week with a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a minor in applied Mathematics. He will be entering the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Northeastern University this fall. He will be focusing on wireless communication. Congratulations Gerardo!

McNair Scholar Alejandra Hernandez was recently interviewed for a KTVB news article about the harmful effects of pesticides and how new research aims to protect Idaho’s farmworkers.

Alejandra, a current research assistant at Boise State and former Idaho farmworker, recounts her first-hand experience in the article.

✨McNair Scholar Highlight✨
Ulises Trujillo-Garcia was recently featured in the U.S. Department of Education blog! His article, titled "Challenge, Opportunities, and Wisdom", is an account of how the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) and TRIO have helped him succeed as a first-generation student.

During his time at Boise State, Ulises has participated in the CAMP and TRIO Rising Scholars programs and he is now a current McNair Scholar. He will graduate with a degree in Civil Engineering in Spring 2022.

We love to see our scholars’ hard work pay off! Congratulations to McNair alum Ahmed Muhumed who recently had his research article published in the Journal of International Humanitarian Action. The article, co-authored with Boise State Assistant Professor, Dr. Selah Ahmed, is titled “Educational Inequality in the Kebribeyah Somali Refugee Camp in Ethiopia: An Autoethnography”. The article, based primarily on Ahmed's first-hand experience in the Somali refugee camp in Ethiopia, investigates how education inequality can adversely impact social cohesion in crisis contexts.

Ahmed graduated from Boise State in Fall 2020 and is currently a graduate student at Florida State University. He is pursuing his Masters in International Affairs.

Halima Hamud, who was awarded the Harry S. Truman Scholarship in April, has recently been announced as a finalist for two additional prestigious awards. Halima is a finalist for both the Pickering Fellowship and the Rangel Scholarship.

The Pickering Fellowship prepares recipients for careers in foreign service. The fellowship finances two-year graduate programs, provides two summer internships, and offers mentoring from a foreign service officer. The Rangel Scholarship awards its fellows with two years of graduate funding and domestic internships on Capitol Hill.

“When I received that ‘congratulations’ email I was so happy and eager for my future. I have been involved in my community as an advocate and bridge builder. And now as a finalist, it demonstrates that I am being encouraged to pursue my higher academic in public service.”

Happy graduation day! Congratulations to the class of 2021!

McNair Scholar Sarah Bofukya Bope graduates with a B.S. in Biology with a Cellular, Molecular, and Biomedical emphasis. Sarah plans to take the MCAT this summer and apply to medical school next year. She hopes to pursue a MD-PhD.
