Placeless Space
Allen Morris, Jacinda Russell, Leah Schretenthaler

Interconnected through multiple generations of academic lineage, this exhibition brings together three artists from around the country who bring their unique approaches to the ideas of place, space, history, and identity to consider the complications that arise when those ideas come up against an ever-evolving human race. Inspired by deeply rooted connections to the land and one another, the work likewise demonstrates the unique and wide-ranging potential of the photographic medium technically and as a physical object to be recontextualized.

Alison Owen
Transliteration

Alison Owen’s work ranges from functional objects to ephemeral constructions, often integrated into installations. It draws attention to interior space, interior life, the life of objects, and the stories they hold. Slab-rolled clay vases hovering between two and three dimensions invoke both vessel and pictorial plane. Decorated with drawings, paintings, or collages, they reference Delftware, ancient ceramics, still life paintings, and flea market finds. Through mimicry, repetition, and layered imagery, Owen explores the long history of domestic objects and their intertwined stories of use and display.

Teal Gardner
I Dreamt I Was My Ancestor...

In this immersive video and sound installation, artist Teal Gardner presents re-edited video footage of Alaska's wild lands, taken by caribou in the Fortymile herd. The caribou were equipped with collar-mounted cameras by Dr. Libby Ehlers and the University of Montana, who used the footage to study how caribou are responding to the pressures of climate change. The installation places viewers at the chest-level perspective of the animals, evoking a strange and intimately shared perspective. Its soundscape consists of an ever-building chorus of bird vocalizations, gleaned from field recordings of birds in the caribou's range. The multiplying birdsong is punctuated by a deep bell sound at regular intervals, like a bell tower ringing the hour. Combining scientific research with reverence for caribou and the ecosystems that support them, the installation invites reflection on kinship, care, and the fragile interconnections of living systems.
