Yesterday Boundary County Master Gardeners got to tour some awesome farms and gardens in Lincoln County Montana, capped off with a tour of the Libby Dam! Great time and opportunity to learn about some of the goings-on upriver on the Kootenai! Hoot owl farm in Libby is particularly cool and sells alot of great produce around the Libby area.

Boundary county is expecting low temperatures tonight (Saturday, June 6th) and especially tomorrow night (Sunday June 7th). Certain colder microclimate parts of the valley may experience frosts. Protecting sensitive, warm season crops (like tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, ect) with season extension implements may be wise. Read more about season extension methods here-

It's fireblight season! Fireblight is a common bacterial disease generally affecting apples and pears. Warm and wet conditions in spring can facilitate fireblight infection and spread. Symptoms often show up as dead leaves and curled stems ("shepherds crook"), oozing, cankers, and discoloration.

Pruning is one of the most effective methods to control fireblight during the growing season. In at least 2 year old trees, prune infected branches by cutting at least 12 inches below the obviously infected portion. Bacteria can spread quickly through young trees and pruning may not be effective.
