Appalachian is located in Boone and part of the “High Country” including Blowing Rock and Banner Elk, near the Virginia and Tennessee borders in northwestern North Carolina. The area is located in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains near federal parks, forests, and wilderness areas. Position Description
Full-time, twelve-month Referral Coordinator position in the Appalachian State University Counseling and Psychological Services Center. The Center is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS) and has a psychology doctoral internship accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).
Duties of the position include providing support, monitoring treatment compliance, and following-up with clients referred to the community for treatment who are high risk, complex, in need of a higher level of care, or who need additional assistance finding a provider; assisting students in finding additional needed resources in the community and arranging appointments with such resources; developing and maintaining an up to date inventory of referral agencies and individual providers in the local area; rotating after hours emergency/crisis on call responsibilities; and, if referral coordination demands allow, providing limited clinical service in short-term individual, group, couples, or family psychotherapy. The position reports to the Director of the Counseling and Psychological Services Center, which is part of the Division of Student Development.
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
Master’s degree from an accredited program in Social Work, or related field, and eligibility for appropriate licensure in North Carolina. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain licensure in North Carolina within one year of start date and maintain licensure for the continuation of the appointment. The successful candidate should (1) be knowledgeable about and skilled in working with a variety of mental and physical health providers and community agencies (2) be knowledgeable about macro-systems issues and have a minimum of one year experience in mental health management or case management (3) be committed to a proactive student development perspective involving an active relationship with the campus community, (4) be team-oriented, “user-friendly” to students, colleagues, and university staff, (5) be prepared to handle a busy caseload, (6) have the ability to handle spontaneous work demands while undertaking projects that require advance planning, (7) have the ability to work at a fast pace, (8) possess a strong work ethic and a willingness to collaborate, (9) be multiculturally competent, possessing the ability and skills to work with diverse populations (ethnic, LGBTQ, gender, etc.), (10) have proficiency in oral and written communication skills, public speaking, and leading group discussions, (11) have broad “generalist” clinical skills in assessing and intervening with a wide range of disorders, concerns, and degrees of pathology in treatment utilizing a time limited model of care, (12) demonstrate a commitment to a developmental philosophy toward both clients and trainees, and (13) be available and willing to attend occasional evening or weekend activities.

2. Active participation in relevant professional organizations
3. Credentials to provide supervision to graduate students in social work
