There is a little known connection between the J.W. Robinson’s Department Store in Palm Springs, CA featured in this commercial, and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. In the text accompanying the Facebook post it mentions that the architects for the Palm Springs store (now designated as a historic building) were the firm of Perreira and Luckman. Charles Luckman was the owner of the Lucky 5 Ranch in the Laguna Mountains of eastern San Diego County from 1940 to 1950. The name of the Ranch (still used today) was derived from the fact that Mr. and Mrs. Luckman, along with their three sons, used the Ranch as a summer home throughout the 1940’s. Luckman sold the ranch to Lawrence Daley in 1950. Today, the vast majority of the Ranch is under ownership by the State of California and The Anza-Borrego Foundation and is the westernmost portion of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The architectural firm of Perreira and Luckman was dissolved in the late 1950’s and Luckman went on to form a separate company, Charles Luckman Associates. Charles Luckman Associates designed some of the United States most prominent buildings constructed in the 1960’s, including the Prudential Tower (Boston), Madison Square Garden (New York), and The Forum (Los Angeles). — Jim Dice
