Meet Abin George (GRS'28), a PhD candidate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering exploring robotics and computer systems research at Boston University's Robomorphic Computing Lab with Professor Sabrina Neuman.

The Robomorphic Computing Laboratory uses real-world insights about robotics and other physically-embodied systems to design high-performance, energy-efficient computing systems. Abin is researching ways to make robotics computing more efficient, particularly from the morphologic perspective.

This is just one of 25+ active research programs happening right now at the Department of Computer Science—each one offering students the chance to contribute to cutting-edge work alongside faculty mentors.

Congratulations, Class of 2026! 🎓🎉

On Friday, May 15, 2026, 479 B.A. and 105 M.S. degree candidates graduated from Boston University’s Department of Computer Science.

Representing a wide range of interdisciplinary undergraduate pathways and advanced graduate programs spanning areas including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data-centric computing, economics, linguistics, mathematics, physics, and statistics, our graduates leave prepared with the knowledge and skills to take on complex challenges in our rapidly changing world.

During the convocation ceremony, the department recognized Mutiraj Laksanawisit as the recipient of the 2026 College Prize in Computer Science; Selene Wu as the recipients of the 2026 Department Prize for Distinguished Undergraduate Achievement, Steve Choi and Alika Grigorova as the recipients of the 2026 Department Prizes for Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement, and Dr. Gonca Gürsun ‘13, as the 2026 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award in Computer Science. A huge congratulations to all our 2026 award recipients!

Addressing the graduating class, Dr. Gürsun shared: “you are graduating at a genuinely remarkable moment from a fantastic university in a field that matters more than ever.”

We are proud of every graduate and the dedication that brought you to this milestone, and we look forward to seeing where your next chapter takes you.

Students from our Computational Fabrication class CS581 held their final project demo session yesterday. In this final project, students teamed up to prototype creative, computation-driven designs in which they develop an algorithm for producing physical products.

Eight student teams presented their final projects:
- Support Structure Minimization
- Lenticular Lens Fabrication
- Custom Parametric Shoe Trees
- 3D Strava Route Visualization
- Light Sculptures
- Digital Low Relief Models
- Growing 3D Forms
- Modular Desk Organizer Generator

Congratulations to Ephraim Linder for receiving a prestigious 2026 Apple Scholars in AIML PhD fellowship!

Ephraim Linder is a PhD student at Boston University, advised by Professor Adam Smith and Professor Sofya Raskhodnikova. Broadly, he is interested in data privacy and sublinear time algorithms, and in particular, in privacy preserving algorithms for statistics and machine learning. His most recent work aims to develop improved tools for privately releasing statistics with little or no obvious structure.

The Apple Scholars in AIML PhD fellowship program supports emerging leaders in academic research through funding as they pursue their PhDs, mentorship with Apple researchers, and internship opportunities. Now in its seventh year, the fellowship program has supported more than 120 emerging leaders in computer science and engineering at the graduate and postgraduate levels.

Boston University’s Computer Science was ranked number 46 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Computer Science Schools, tying with North Carolina State University, University of Utah, Vanderbilt University, and Washington University in St. Louis. The top three universities were Carnegie Mellon University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Stanford University.

U.S. News rankings are considered by some to be one of the most influential college rankings used by parents, students, and guidance officials in choosing a college or university. Boston University is one of more than 800 institutions with graduate schools surveyed by U.S. News on an annual basis. This year, U.S. News ranked 205 computer science programs.
