July 20th, 1999—a dark day in history for mainland China.
26 years ago today, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched an unprecedented campaign of persecution against Falun Gong, a peaceful meditation practice rooted in the Buddhist tradition. The nation plunged into a state of terror overnight as Falun Gong practitioners across China were hunted down, kidnapped, detained, and arrested. Once celebrated by government officials, Falun Gong was suddenly an enemy of the state and top CCP officials ordered it to be eradicated from society. Police were given free reign to break Falun Gong practitioners physically and mentally, using any means necessary to force them to give up their faith.
For the past 26 years, hundreds of thousands of innocent Falun Gong practitioners have been brainwashed, tortured, killed, and even had their organs harvested simply for their beliefs. While some Falun Gong practitioners have managed to flee China and escape this brutal persecution, many others have lost their lives, refusing to renounce their faith even to their dying breath. As the CCP has continued to persecute its own citizens for 26 long years, Falun Gong practitioners have remained peaceful and resilient, protesting the CCP’s evil persecution and totalitarian reign in the best way they know how—by remaining truthful, compassionate, and tolerant.
As countries around the world pass laws and resolutions to condemn the CCP’s crimes against humanity, the Falun Gong Protection Act awaits approval in the United States. All eyes are on the governments of the free world—who will remain silent in the face of the CCP’s brutality, and who will take action to protect Falun Gong practitioners and advocate for freedom of belief for all?
