Last week, Boston University’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 355 proudly hosted our Annual Awards Night — an evening dedicated to recognizing the outstanding achievements, leadership, and dedication of our cadets throughout the academic year. Cadets were honored for their excellence in academics, physical fitness, leadership, and service, with awards presented by distinguished guests and representatives from various military and civilian organizations.

The night also marked a significant moment of transition, as we conducted our Change of Command ceremony. We formally transferred leadership responsibilities and celebrated the exceptional service of our outgoing command staff. Looking ahead, we are excited to announce that Detachment 355 will be transitioning from a Cadet Delta back to a traditional Cadet Wing structure.

In addition, we took the opportunity to express our deepest gratitude and bid farewell to three incredible members of our cadre: Major Foulkrod, TSgt Martins, and TSgt Abioye. Each has left a lasting legacy on our detachment through their mentorship, leadership, and unwavering support. We were honored to present them with parting gifts as a small token of our appreciation. They will be greatly missed, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

It was a night filled with reflection, recognition, and pride — a true celebration of what makes the Flying Tigers a family.

A few weeks ago, Detachment 355 had the honor of competing in the annual Sheehan Cup alongside cadets and midshipmen from the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps which included events including tug of war, dodgeball, relay races, Man Under Fire, and soccer. While each branch showcased outstanding skill and determination, Detachment 355 distinguished itself through exceptional morale, unity, and esprit de corps—embodying the true spirit of the Flying Tigers. Proud to represent the Department of the Air Force and continue our tradition of excellence both on and off the field.

This past Saturday, Detachment 355 came together with other detachments across the Northeast Region for an incredible Field Training Exercise (FLX). The AS100s (first-year cadets) focused on small unit tactics, land navigation, and tactical combat casualty care led by the Professional Officer Course cadets. While the AS200s (second-year cadets), took on the leadership obstacle course in preparation for Field Training this coming summer. The Flying Tigers had the amazing opportunity to unite forces, sharpen skills, and build bonds!

Day One of the Group Leadership Exercise is in full swing! The Professional Officer Course (POC) Cadets took a full year to plan out a leadership exercise for the General Military Course (GMC) cadets to solve. Through this exercise, cadets are stepping into real world scenarios as leaders taking what they have previously learned throughout the semester. Cadets are sharpening their skills, tackling challenges, and working as a team in their flights to complete the mission. There has been growth, teamwork, and determination yet the mission has just begun...

As many may not know, BU Giving Day is coming up soon! You can support Air and Space Force leaders through the AFROTC Detachment 355 Discretionary Fund. Your generous donation will go directly toward providing scholarships, training opportunities, and much-needed resources for our cadets as they work toward becoming highly-qualified Officer Trainees.

Every contribution, no matter the size, creates meaningful opportunities for our cadets and ensures we can continue to foster the next generation of Citizen-Airmen. Your support helps us continue to build on our mission to develop future leaders who are dedicated to serving our country with integrity, honor, and excellence.

We are deeply grateful for the ongoing support of our alumni, family, friends, and all those who believe in our mission. Your kindness truly makes a difference in the lives of our cadets. The Flying Tigers had an unforgettable evening at the annual Boston University Joint Service Military Ball with the BU Army, Navy, and Marine Detachments! It was a memorable night of tradition, recognition, and camaraderie. The formal event included an Honor Guard and Prisoners of War Missing in Action (POW/MIA) ceremony while recognizing guests and the seniors that will be soon to be Second Lieutenants. Cadets had the opportunity to speak with multiple distinguished guests including Tuskegee Airman Enoch Woodhouse and the President of Boston University, Professor Melissa Gilliam.

Who needs traffic lights when the Flying Tigers are on duty? 🚦

This week at LLAB 5, the Flying Tigers focused on detail marching and road guard procedures. Cadets drilled down on the essentials of keeping the formation tight and safe, perfecting their timing and coordination. Every step forward is a step toward excellence!

We also heard an inspiring Airman Story from our very own Cadet Kumar, who shared his reasons for joining ROTC and encouraged the detachment to embrace the uniqueness each cadet brings to the team.

To top it off, we celebrated a major milestone during our contracting ceremony, where two of our cadets officially contracted into the Air Force! As recipients of the prestigious HSSP AFROTC scholarship, they have made a significant commitment to the service, and we couldn’t be prouder of their dedication and passion for leadership. Congratulations, and welcome to the next chapter of your Air Force journey!

The Flying Tigers had a blast at Curtis Cup, joining forces with our fellow services for some competitive flag football action 🏈 While we didn’t take home the win on the field, we’d say we absolutely won the morale game with our chants, posters, and unbeatable team spirit! A huge shoutout to everyone who brought the energy and enthusiasm—we may not have the trophy, but we’ve definitely got the spirit! We’ll get em’ next year...!

Our final Senior Spotlight is on Cadet Theodore Tonna!

He loves flying, and is proud to have organized two cadet-development opportunities with Pease Air National Guard Base, including an incentive flight on a KC-46!

Field Training wasn't enough for him once, so last year he came back as a Cadet Training Assistant and lead Alpha Flight to win the Warrior challenge over 15 other flights! In his own words, “the lessons I learned in leadership and mentorship will stay with me for the rest of my career. It's easy to act like a leader, but very hard to build credibility for others to want to follow you.”

Cadet Tonna has been selected for a pilot slot, and will be going to Patrick SFB Florida as a Gold Bar Recruiter, followed by Columbus AFB, Mississippi for Pilot training!
