Anna Howard Shaw Center The Anna Howard Shaw Center at Boston University School of Theology promotes structures and practices that empower women and honor diversity.

The Center is named after the Reverend Doctor Anna Howard Shaw, a Methodist minister, medical doctor, and suffragist. Ten years after its founding in 1978, the Shaw Center was designated as the women’s center for the Northeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church.

Join the Anna Howard Shaw Center for our Thursday lunch lecture in room 325! Our guest is Eunji Lee, a 1st-year MDiv student. Eunji will be lecturing on "Walking Together in Wonder." She is an international student from South Korea. Eunji was a member of the Korean Methodist Church, worked in a mission organization (Youth With A Mission) and LightPoint church, and is pursuing ordination in the United Methodist Church.

Join the Anna Howard Shaw Center for our Thursday lunch lecture in the room 325! Our guest is Charlie Buttrey, an M.T.S. student Student. He anticipates being awarded his degree in 2024. After graduating from Princeton University and Vermont Law School, Charlie began to practice law in Vermont and New Hampshire in 1986, focusing on criminal defense, chiefly of indigent clients. His legal experience has informed his desire to pursue prison reform after STH.

Join the Anna Howard Shaw Center for our Thursday lunch lecture in room 325! Our guest is Diego Garrido, a 1st year MDiv. Diego Garrido Barreto is from Bogotá, Colombia. He is a writer and researcher interested in the mystic traditions as ways to create interreligious dialogue. Bachelor in Arts for Literature studies of the Pontifical Javeriana University. Back in Bogotá, he was co-founder of the Group for the reading of Mystical texts and screenwriter for the radio soap opera "Nobody Knows how much i missed him." Failed writer, failed straight husband, and his thesis on Ways to lose perception of time was awarded as one of his best. His lecture is about his love at first sight, a dead French theologian. Join the Anna Howard Shaw Center for our Thursday Lunch Lecture Series on Thursday, March 2, from 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm in STH 325. Our guest speaker, Terra Frederick will lecture on "I said I was an example...I didn't Say what kind. Leadership by example"

Terra is a current STM student at BU STH. This is Terra's fourth year at BU STH as she received her M.DIV from BU in May 22. Terra's academic interests are practical theology and Hebrew Bible and often finds herself at the intersection of both. Terra is a current candidate for Elder ordination in The United Methodist Church. Terra recently gave a TedXBU Talk on Knitting and Community Creation. Terra Enjoys art museums and knitting, and she is awaiting for promotion to wife on May 27th 2023.

Join the Anna Howard Shaw Center for our Thursday Lunch Lecture on Thursday, February 23, from 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm in STH 325. Our guest speaker, Dr. Becky Copeland, will lecture on "Doing Everything Isn't Leading: The Challenges of Empowerment and Collaboration for a Classic Type-A"

Dr. Becky Copeland is an Assistant Professor of Theology and the Director of the Faith and Ecological Justice Program. Becky Copeland is a teacher and academic at the intersection of classical Christian theology and ecology. Her theological research explores how an ecologically-formed and -informed relational approaches reshapes Christian doctrine, and her Biblical research asks how attention to the marginalized non-human characters within scripture reshapes interpretation. She loves teaching STH students, and particularly enjoys the relationships formed over several semesters with students pursuing the Faith and Ecological Justice Certificate. She lives in Hyde Park with her rescue pup, Ollie.

Join the Anna Howard Shaw Center for our Thursday lunch lecture on Thursday, February 16, from 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm in STH 325. Our guest speaker, Dr. McCarty, will lecture on “Leading in a Good Way: Learning How to Lead from Peacemaking Circles.”

Dr. James McCarty is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Religion and Conflict Transformation and Director of the Tom Porter Religion and Conflict Transformation Program. He teaches courses in restorative justice, community organizing, public theologies, and conflict transformation. He has written on the intersections of racial justice, restorative justice, peacebuilding, transitional justice, and Christian Ethics, including Asian American Christian Ethics. Prior to coming to STH, he was Executive Director for Equity and Inclusion and an affiliate faculty member of the School of Education at the University of Washington Tacoma. Dr. McCarty has been a minister and restorative justice, peacebuilding, and transformative justice practitioner in both the United States and in East Africa.

Anine defines herself as a traveler: from the Netherlands to many countries on three continents, unwillingly settling in the US. From the University of Amsterdam via Oklahoma State University to Boston University, and from atheism via Hinduism and Unitarianism to Christianity. During her travels, she always studied people: why they behave as they do and why is it so hard to be kind? How can we be meek leaders?

The Peer Support Group, sponsored by and held in the Anna Howard Shaw Center, is for all STH students interested in self-care and spiritual renewal. This group is intentionally designed for all students to share their struggles and support each other in the process of their vocational discernment and academic quest. The maximum number of participants for this group is 8-10 members. The Shaw Center staff will lead this group this semester. This group will meet in-person every Thursday 2 pm - 3 pm, in the Shaw Center (STH 320) from Feb. 2 to May 4. Please email the Shaw Center at ([email protected]) to register.

The Anna Howard Shaw Center is excited to announce that the Fall 2022 edition of our bi-annual Newsletter is available! Our newsletter is titled "Women in Leadership, " our working theme this semester.

We are so grateful to our wonderful contributors - Dean Mary Elizabeth Moore, Kasey Kelly, Cynthia Perry, and Natalie Readnour - who have graciously shared their voices with us. This newsletter includes a recap of our 6th Annual Multicultural Expo, fliers, and photos from our Thursday Lunch Lecture Series.

We have enjoyed our time in person together and deeply appreciate everyone who has joined us at various events, offered lectures and presentations, and those who have come in and made the Shaw Center a place for rest/study/friendship/+more.
