Hello dancers!

We are so grateful for your support and patience these past few days - there has been a great deal of information disseminated both from local events and BU administration and we have been working hard to come up with a comprehensive statement addressing all the affected aspects of our club. Yes, this message is long and detailed but we strongly urge you to read all sections that are relevant to you. If you have any questions, feel free to comment them below and an e-board member will answer as soon as possible.

Boston Tea Party

As most of you will have seen by now, the BU event of the semester, Boston Tea Party has been cancelled. If you have paid us for this event already, we will be working quickly to make sure everyone is refunded. If you paid via Venmo, you should receive your money shortly. If you paid via check, we will void your check, as they have not yet been deposited by our treasurer. If you paid in cash, please let us know and we will arrange a refund in a way that is convenient for both you and our e-board members.

Weekly Lessons

Because our club is first and foremost a BU undergraduate organization and lessons are held on BU’s campus using BU’s resources, we are committed to following the guidelines BU has put into place. BU has mandated that all club events - including and especially meetings and rehearsals that involve people in close contact - be cancelled through April 13th. In light of this information, BUWCS weekly lessons will be suspended until further notice. As time passes, we should receive more information from the university about how to proceed for the rest of the semester, and we will share that information with you when we have it.

Membership Fees

Due to the cancellation of our partially funded event and the suspension of BU lessons, we will be refunding a portion of membership fees this semester. As we receive more information about how this semester will progress, we will update you on how and when the refunds will take place.

Club Events

This semester, our e-board was extremely excited to be hosting workshops following both BTP and ESS Boston. Both of these events will be cancelled. We are obviously disappointed to make this decision, as we were all looking forward to hosting high quality events for our members, but due to BU’s guidelines and the safety of both our members and the dance professionals, these events will no longer be taking place. We are hopeful that we will be able to hold similar events in the future.

Mentorship Program

For members of the club involved in BU’s mentorship program, please contact either your mentee or mentor for more information on how these meetings will be taking place. We urge both mentors and mentees to consider their own comfort level and health before deciding how to continue. There is no obligation to continue these meetings throughout the rest of the semester, nor is there an obligation to stop them if both parties are able to agree on a course of action. However, we do ask that you refrain from using BU space or meeting on BU’s campus.

The Rest of the Semester and More Information

As BU updates their university policies regarding clubs, classes, and gatherings, we will continue to keep all members of our club informed. We do not currently know the university’s plan for events and meetings occurring after April 13th, so please stay tuned for updates and further information. Our e-board members received most of this information over Spring Break and will try and respond to everyone promptly and accurately, but we do ask for your patience and understanding, as many of us do not yet know when we will be returning to Boston.

Hey! My name is Vanessa Kjeldsen and I’m a freshman majoring in Journalism! I discovered the West Coast community in the fall of 2019 and have fallen in love with its vibrancy. I’m so excited to be Secretary for this semester and can’t wait to ~swing~ in the new year with you all!!

Believe it or not, this is only SOME of the Boston westie fam that made it to Swingle Bell Rock this weekend. We were so lucky to be able to take so many people from our club to this incredible event. It was the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit and experience lessons, social dancing, competition, and Christmas shenanigans with the best of the best. Thanks to everyone who made it such a special weekend! (Fun fact: this group pic was taken by reigning US Open champ Gary McIntyre 😱)

It’s our final instructor highlight! Amanda Clark began her dance journey in 1998 when she was introduced to ballroom at Northeastern University where she attended school. Ballroom was an immediate love for Amanda and she trained extensively in all 4 styles of ballroom competing throughout the collegiate circuit until graduation from her masters program. Eventually, Amanda specialized in International Standard and American Smooth, competing professionally for 7 years until she retired 2013 from professional ballroom competition. That year she was introduced to West Coast Swing and Country Couples dancing and began training in both circuits. She currently competes at the top of her professional division in UCWDC Couples dancing and recently placed 3rd at UCWDC Worlds, in Division 1 Open with her professional partner, Christopher Muise. She also travels the WSDC circuit and currently competes in the advanced and rising star divisions for fun.Amanda enjoys working with all levels and ages of dancer, with goals that vary from fitness and social recreation to serious competitor. She has been coaching BU West Coast Swing Club since the club started and is currently teaching the Advanced class. She also is the smooth/standard coach for the Boston University Ballroom team, as well as teaching regular lessons in Newton, MA. On weekends Amanda travels regularly to train, teach, compete and judge within several dance circuits. Amanda also enjoys training new teachers and several of her past students have gone on to become instructors and professional competitors themselves.
