EVOLVE: In recent years, the art form of opera has seen more diverse stories, exciting new initiatives, and renewed commitments to inclusivity. Is opera in its strongest era yet? 🙌

Boston University School of Music and Boston University Opera Institute alums spoke with CFA about how they are leveraging their experiences as performers and as arts administrators to open the world of opera to more people—on both sides of the curtain. 🎶🎭 🌎

“Opera has survived every World War, the French Revolution, plagues, slavery, the Holocaust, the Civil Rights Movement,” says Ishan Johnson (CFA’06), a baritone, chief philanthropic officer at Boston Lyric Opera, and member of Boston University’s Alumni Council. “Operas are being produced today during very tumultuous times. Opera is not going anywhere.”

CREATIVES IN PRACTICE: Since 2019, BU School of Visual Arts associate professor Lucy Kim has been using genetically modified bacteria to produce melanin, the bio-pigment behind human skin, hair, and eye color, in her work. A recipient of the 2022 Creative Capital Award, Kim began this project while an artist-in-residence at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and then brought it to Boston University Biology labs. 🥼

Last year, Kim had a solo exhibition of her melanin prints titled Mutant Optics at the Henry Art Gallery – University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. 🖼️ For her exhibition at the Henry, Kim, who was named a 2026 Wagner Arts Fellow, created an installation of new melanin works made from images of vanilla plants, extending her broader investigations into the relationship between bioengineering, visual appearance, and the social and cultural construction of race and perception.

In CFA’s Creatives in Practice, Kim shares insights into the history of melanin and vanilla, what her years of work have meant for her, and how she ties what she’s learned as a working artist to her role as an educator for the next generation of painters and visual artists. 🖌️

BTS 🎥: Earlier this year, Dean Harvey Young served as a 2026 Pulitzer Prize-Drama Juror! 🏆

For the Drama Prize, a jury, composed of critics, academics, and playwrights, reviews playscripts submitted from dozens of New York and regional productions in a period concurrent with the journalism competition following an early January submission deadline. Although the award is conferred to the playwright(s) of the winning work, the production of the play is taken into account. ✍️ 🎭

Award-winning photojournalist Jose R. Lopez captured the conversations behind the scenes of the Pulitzer Prize-Drama jury deliberation. Pictured are Helen Shaw (NY Times), Quiara Alegria Hudes, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Harvey Young, and Charles McNulty (LA Times).

NEWS: Join CFA in congratulating Boston University Professor Lynne Allen for her appointment as interim dean of the College! 👏 As Dean Harvey Young prepares to conclude his service on June 30, internationally recognized artist and scholar Lynne Allen steps back into the role effective July 1.

Allen, professor of art, printmaking, chair of print media and photography; former director of BU School of Visual Arts; and a 2025 Guggenheim Fellow, also served as CFA interim dean in 2015–2017, when she was Young’s immediate predecessor.

“Serving as interim dean nearly 10 years ago was a responsibility I took very seriously, and I approach this opportunity with the same commitment,” Allen says. “I’m humbled and honored by the confidence placed in me and by the opportunity to work alongside the many talented people at CFA. I really believe in the faculty and the staff at the College of Fine Arts." ❤️

As interim dean, Allen plans to maintain and grow Dean Young's programs, while paving the way for the next dean. At the same time, Allen will continue to teach in the Print Media & Photography program, a firm believer that "you can’t really be a good leader if you don’t know what the students are thinking.”

WATCH: See MFA recent grads Shalee Cole Mauleón (CFA’26), Directing, and Joice Caldeira Simao (CFA’26), Costume Design, as they collaborate on Libby Carr’s Calf Scramble, a new workshop production at Boston University CFA School of Theatre presented in fall 2025 as part of Boston University’s annual Fringe Festival. 🎓🎭

In a barn outside Huntsville, Texas, five Future Farmers of America raise and ruin their prize-winning calves. CALF SCRAMBLE, written by Libby Carr, is a raucous rodeo of girls playing God, clambering for power over their animals, their bodies, and each other.

“For me, the part of theater that I love the most is collaborating with playwrights… To be able to do that as my thesis production and have Boston University support that is a gift,” says Shalee.

“I chose to do my master's at Boston University to challenge myself. I feel like since I got into this program, I've grown a lot as a professional. I feel ready to work in the industry,” says Joice.
