PAMLab at City University of Hong Kong

PAMLab at City University of Hong Kong The PAMLab @ CityU studies phonetics, acquisition, and multilingualism over the lifespan.

The Phonetics, Acquisition & Multilingualism Lab (PAMLab) is a research cluster in the Department of Linguistics and Translation at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU). We study the processing, representation, and development of speech over the lifespan in bi- and multilingual individuals of all ages. Our studies take place in the Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Academic Building on the CityU campus

in Kowloon Tong. Participation typically consists of filling out a background questionnaire and completing language tasks that involve speaking into a microphone and/or listening to audio recordings over headphones. For further information on our work or to inquire about current studies you could participate in, please feel free to get in touch by email or phone or visit our website (contact information below).

New paper alert: congratulations to lab alum Dr. Felix Kpogo and Prof. Chang on the publication of their article entitled "Age, gender, and locality effects on innovation in the Twi vowel harmony system" in Language Variation and Change! 🤩

This article is the first paper from Felix's PhD dissertation. It argues for "the importance of local social context for the manifestation of variation and the unique insights of non-Western communities for sociolinguistic theory."

The lab is excited to welcome Dr. Miquel Llompart to LT.CityU the week of 16-20 March! During his visit, Dr. Llompart will deliver lectures (including the below LT Research Forum), meet with our faculty and students, and learn about teaching and research in Hong Kong.

LT CityUHK will host the fourth seminar at the LT Research Forum this March. Prof. Miquel Llompart (University Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona) will present preliminary findings from his ongoing research using novel experimental designs to disentangle experiential and cognitive factors. This lecture explores how bilinguals process phonological variability in spoken word recognition under societal bilingualism, with a focus on the Catalan mid‑vowel contrasts /e/–/ɛ/ and /o/–/ɔ/, which are absent in Spanish and variably realized across speakers. The talk provides a valuable opportunity for academics and students to engage with cutting‑edge research in speech perception and second language acquisition. All are welcome!

Title: Between uncertainty and flexibility: Spoken word recognition under mid‑vowel variation in Catalan
