🎓✨ Capstone Presentations – You’re Invited! ✨🎓

Join us on April 30th at 10 AM in Walker 405 for an exciting showcase of student-led consulting projects! Our Capstone class will be presenting two semester-long collaborations with real-world clients:

🔹 Medford Family Network – a local nonprofit
🔹 Transylvania Moving Company – a small business on the rise

These incredible projects represent the hard work and creativity of our 10 students (two dynamic teams), and we’re thrilled to welcome the founders of both organizations to the event!

💡 Whether you’re a fellow student, professor, or industry friend, you’re welcome to attend and support our students’ final presentations. Special thanks to Diego for helping organize this event!

🎥 We also hope to record the event via Zoom to help promote the impact of Capstone work in our department. And exciting news—starting Fall 2025, we’ll be teaming up with the Comm Department to host Capstone events together!

Let’s celebrate innovation, collaboration, and student success. See you there!

💪✨ Happy International Women’s Day! ✨💪

Today, we celebrate all the incredible women around the world—the dreamers, the leaders, the nurturers, the change-makers. Your strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit light the path for future generations.

Whether you’re breaking barriers in the boardroom, caring for loved ones at home, advocating for change in your community, or simply being your authentic self, your impact is powerful and profound.

Let’s continue to lift each other up, spread love, and create spaces where all women feel seen, heard, and valued. Together, we are unstoppable!

Today, we honor the dreamer who changed the world—a visionary leader who taught us to dream big, love deeply, and fight for justice. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. showed us that courage and compassion can move mountains and that hope can transform hearts. As we celebrate his life and legacy, let’s continue his work by spreading kindness, standing for equality, and believing in the power of change.

Let’s keep the dream alive. 💙

Creativity and Experimentation with Generative AI: Professor Katie Youn’s ProSkills Workshop

In her ProSkills Workshop on the use of Image Generative (Gen) AI in marketing communication, Professor Youn led students through a guided prompt, allowing them to “experiment and play” with Gen AI on Adobe Firefly as they worked collaboratively to create a print advertisement for the chosen mock-product—in this case, Cold Brew Coffee. She emphasized the significance of this experimentation stage, saying that it is through experimenting that students “best develop their creativity” while gaining proficiency with these skills.

Youn also made sure to acknowledge the newness of Gen AI in the digital marketing landscape, emphasizing to students the importance of adhering to any policies or standards surrounding AI set by their professors and their potential employers. Youn went on to encourage transparency with AI usage, stating that such transparency is important to build and maintain trust with diverse stakeholders.

With all this in mind, Youn delivered an overview of the ethical practices and potential pitfalls of using Gen AI in marketing communication, providing students with vital information to consider when using Gen AI and then engaging students in the interactive activity of using Adobe Firefly to produce a Cold Brew Coffee advertisement. In closing, she asked students to reflect on their work and the whole process, and discussed how to use Gen AI strategically and critically in the context of marketing.

Melanie Perkins is the female co-founder of Canva, a widely popular online graphic design platform. Born in Perth, Australia, Perkins demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age. While studying at the University of Western Australia, she noticed the complexities of graphic design software and the challenges people faced in creating professional-quality designs. This observation planted the seed for what would eventually become Canva.

In 2007, while still a student, Perkins launched her first startup called "Fusion Books," an online design tool for creating school yearbooks. This venture provided her with valuable insights into the design software market and laid the groundwork for Canva's future success. However, it wasn't until she teamed up with Cameron Adams and Cliff Obrecht that Canva truly began to take shape.

In 2012, Perkins, Adams, and Obrecht founded Canva with a mission to democratize design and make it accessible to everyone, regardless of their design skills or budget. Their vision was to create a platform that simplified the design process through intuitive tools and templates, empowering users to unleash their creativity without the need for extensive training or experience.

Under Perkins' leadership as CEO, Canva experienced rapid growth and garnered widespread acclaim. The platform's user-friendly interface, vast library of design assets, and collaborative features have made it a go-to tool for individuals, businesses, and organizations worldwide. Today, Canva boasts millions of users across 190 countries and has been valued at billions of dollars, solidifying its status as a global leader in the design industry.

Perkins' journey as a female entrepreneur and co-founder of Canva serves as an inspiration to women everywhere, demonstrating the power of perseverance, innovation, and vision in achieving success in traditionally male-dominated fields. Her leadership has not only transformed the way people approach design but has also paved the way for greater inclusivity and accessibility in the creative landscape.
