As Black History Month comes to a close and we start to move into National Athletic Training Month, we want to recognize Nina Walker for her contributions to the field of Athletic Training. Nina graduated from BU in 1999 and went on to work at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her impact has been felt on a global level as the Athletic Trainer for US Men’s Indoor Lacrosse. We are honored to have such influential alumni who strive everyday to better the field of athletic training for future generations.

Second year MSAT student, Ali Barahona had the opportunity this past fall to do her immersive clinical experience at Home Base, an organization that provides care to veterans and their families. While there, she wrote fitness-related articles that enhanced patient education. We love seeing the growth in our students and the ways in which they find opportunities to continually contribute to the field of athletic training. Check out her amazing work below!

Wonder why HIIT has become so popular lately? Curious about why you breath so heavily and why your heart races even when you're done exercising? The two may be related. Home Base's Athletic Training Intern, Ali Barahona, discusses the relationship between HIIT and EPOC!

“If I say something today that touches you, I hope it brings you to action”

This afternoon our very own Mark Laursen gave the William E “Pinky” Newell Keynote Address at the EATA Conference. Thank you Mark, for providing insight into what the future of Athletic Training may hold for each of us and reminding us all what it means to be a part of this community. We are honored to hear from you and continue to be inspired by your words.

One of the many things that makes athletic training great is the opportunity to collaborate with other students and professionals in the field. Some of our MSAT2 students had the opportunity to collaborate with ISU’s DAT and PHD program this weekend for a heat stroke simulation.
It’s always a good time of year to practice emergency care skills!

Happy Friday! Our second year MSAT students are starting to wind down their full time clinical experiences throughout the country. We have loved seeing them become fully immersed at each of their sites and learn from those around them.

As we near the end of this week congratulating and commending Sara Brown for all of her accomplishments, we have a message from our new Program Director, Kim Mace, friend and colleague of Sara’s, reflecting on the impact that Sara has made over the past 30 years here at Boston University.

If you have ever had the opportunity to learn from Sara Brown, you will recognize these images amongst many more that color her lectures. At the start of each year, Sara would task the first year MSAT students with the question “If you were alone in the Arctic, how would you take a heart out of a whale?” Met by many confused looks, Sara has challenged us from the very beginning to think outside of the box and use our creative minds to enhance our athletic training abilities. We are so grateful for the unmatched lessons Sara has bestowed upon us and will forever continue to ask ourselves just how to get a heart out of a whale.
