Driven by a passion for science and a desire to solve real-world climate and agricultural problems, Trinity Olander (CAS’27, GRS’27) and her team turned a gold-medal iGEM research project into Averra—a biotech startup bringing real-time soil biosensing directly to farmers.

"Studying both biology and entrepreneurship has challenged me to approach problems from different angles, embrace uncertainty, and think beyond the boundaries of any one field," Olander says.

Ahead of emceeing the 2026 IDEA Con, Olander reflects on stepping into entrepreneurship, navigating uncertainty, and why simply showing up opens doors.

Meet Alaiza Roth (CAS'30), one of the 3,706 freshmen who joined the BU community this fall!

Describing herself as a "Pacific Island girl who surfs in the snow,” Roth has dual US-Fiji citizenship and loves competitive snowboarding. Her goal is to qualify for both the Junior World Championships and the 2030 Winter Olympics, but for now, she's studying international relations with the idea of becoming a human rights lawyer.

How can you study nature if you're always cooped up in a lab?

This very question is what drove Abby Robinson (GRS'26) to coordinate a research agreement with the conservancy that runs Rose Kennedy Greenway. Since then, she's expanded her original arrangement into an inclusive citizen science program to track population levels and migratory patterns in the 17-acre downtown Boston public park.

“Doing what we can to create spaces in cities that are good habitats for these organisms is just good,” says Robinson.

New England autumns have long been the subject of endless fascination and wonder. As we step into October, Bostonians are wondering what kind of foliage this fall has in store for us.

In a recent Q&A with Arts x Sciences, Richard B. Primack, professor of biology and expert in plant ecology, discusses the science behind leaf transformation, what we can learn from foliage records throughout history, and his predictions for this season's assortment of colors.

"All in all, we have great conditions for this year’s fall foliage season," says Primack.
