Founded in 1919 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur as the first Catholic college for women in New England, Emmanuel today is a coeducational, residential college with a 17-acre campus in the heart of Boston's educational, scientific, cultural and medical communities. Emmanuel enrolls more than 2,000 students including 1,800 traditional undergraduate students from 35 states and territories and 4

2 countries. At Emmanuel College, excellence in the liberal arts and sciences intersects with experiential learning opportunities, including student-faculty collaboration on research and scholarship; internships with an array of corporations, institutions and nonprofits; service learning; study abroad programs; and scores of co-curricular activities that promote engagement and leadership. The College offers more than 70 majors, minors and concentrations in the arts, humanities, sciences, business, education and nursing, along with graduate programs in education, nursing and management, across five academic schools. The Emmanuel community came together in prayer and song this week at the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit.

A tradition at Catholic colleges since the 16th century, the Mass seeks an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the full breadth of the community’s endeavors throughout the new academic year.

“In this sense, we recognize—we celebrate—that we are a link in a luminous chain of thinkers, artists, researchers, and scholars committed to the pursuit of truth in the Catholic intellectual tradition,” said Emmanuel President Beth Ross. “A chain of searchers who understand the connections between reason and faith, learning and service, knowledge and the deepest desires of the human heart. And a chain of believers alive to the possibility of transcendence in our everyday encounters and endeavors.”

Before their first day of classes, 400+ incoming Saints rolled up their sleeves for the Emmanuel New Student Day of Service on Sept. 1 — hitting 22 sites across Boston, from food pantries to shelters to community gardens 🌱

"It's always been part of Emmanuel's culture to take our learning outside of the classroom," said Campus Minister Sofia Estrada-Hannigan. "Today you're part of a tradition that's more than 100 years old."

A few service sites:
📍 Yawkey Center Food Pantry (Dorchester) — processing bulk donations to serve 400 households that day
📍 Food Project greenhouse (Dudley) — hands-on with sustainable urban agriculture
📍 Haley House Soup Kitchen — gardening + community building

Neve Sheckells ’27 urged her peers to take the experience to heart: "Make service a part of your Emmanuel journey... an irrevocable facet of the person you become while you're here."

Emmanuel kicked off its 108th academic school year this week with words of welcome, advice, and purpose for the Class of 2030. 💙💛

"We want you to leave here prepared not simply for what you will do, but for who you will become," said President Beth Ross.

Keynote speaker Dr. Jason King, Director of the Center for Catholic Studies at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, spoke to the value of higher education, noting that college graduates earn significantly more over their careers. He also emphasized the unique benefits of Catholic education.

"Graduates of Catholic colleges tend to view work differently... they are more likely to say their work is a vocation, that has meaning and purpose," said Dr. King. "It's not just a job... it matters to you; it makes the world better."

Senator Markey reflected on the lasting impact of Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement and recognized Emmanuel’s pioneering history of educating women at a time when many colleges admitted only men.

Two Saints, two paths, one partnership rooted in community and education. 💙💛

Kyle Antoine '24 G'25 connected with The Calculus Project through a School of Education fellowship and has been with the program ever since. He just wrapped his second summer as a lead teacher, planning lessons and building a classroom culture where students feel comfortable thinking and speaking as mathematicians. That experience helped him land his first full-time teaching position at TechBoston Academy.

"Experience with The Calculus Project sticks out on a resume, especially when applying to one of our many partner schools in the Boston area," he said.

Oscar Cabral '26 followed a similar path — starting as a fellow before growing into a Peer Teacher Leader role, where he now hires, onboards, and supervises roughly 50 Peer Teachers each summer.

"It's heartwarming to build connections with the students coming into the program and then see how well they're doing afterward," Cabral said. "The Calculus Project does a great job of building community."
